Attempted Murder Charges Filed Against Lagerald Vick
According to a police affidavit, Vick, 29, faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. His bond has been set at $1.5 million. The incident reportedly took place at a party on the north side of Memphis.
The victim, identified as Carlos Funzie, told authorities that he was confronted by a man, later identified as Vick, who had a handgun concealed under his armpit. Funzie stated that he attempted to de-escalate the situation by turning away. It was at this moment, Funzie alleges, that he was shot in the lower back by the assailant, who then fled the scene.
Funzie was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. During the police investigation, the victim provided the suspect’s first name and subsequently identified Vick from a six-person photographic lineup. Vick was apprehended on Saturday afternoon. He does not currently have a listed attorney and is scheduled for a bail review hearing on Tuesday.
Lagerald Vick’s Basketball Career at Kansas
Born in Memphis, Lagerald Vick enrolled at the University of Kansas in 2015, embarking on a notable college basketball career. As a freshman, he was part of the Jayhawks team that secured the national championship. Throughout his tenure in Lawrence, the team achieved subsequent strong finishes, including third, fourth, and 19th place in national rankings in the years following his freshman season.
Vick departed the Kansas program in February 2019, citing personal matters that led him to miss the remainder of his senior season. Prior to his departure, he demonstrated significant skill, particularly in his senior year where he averaged 14.1 points per game. He also set a school record during that season by making eight three-pointers in a single game without a miss.
Professional Career and Subsequent Events
Following his departure from Kansas, Vick pursued a professional basketball career internationally. He played in various countries, including Taiwan, Colombia, Venezuela, Uruguay, and New Zealand. He reportedly stepped away from professional basketball in 2024.
The arrest and charges mark a significant and concerning turn of events for the former college athlete. The legal proceedings are ongoing, with his next court appearance focused on a review of his bail conditions.
