Loch Ness Monster Sightings Continue to Captivate
The enduring mystery of the Loch Ness Monster, affectionately known as Nessie, continues to draw global attention nearly a century after the legend first took hold. Reports of sightings persist, with the current year already matching last year’s total, fueling the imagination of cryptozoologists and tourists alike.
A Glimpse of the Legendary Creature in 2026
This year has seen six reported encounters with the elusive creature in the waters of Loch Ness, near Inverness. Five of these were reported by eyewitnesses, while one was captured via a live webcam feed, underscoring the diverse ways Nessie continues to make her presence felt.
March 1: A Dark Green Emergence
An American tourist, Tony Inhorn, reported a sighting on March 1st, describing what appeared to be Nessie’s dark greenish or grey body emerging from the water. He estimated the exposed portion to be between 5 to 10 feet in length and positioned at a 45-degree angle. Inhorn stated, “She came about two feet out of the water and her exposed portion was about 5-10 feet in length, suggesting it was just her very top. She was about 15 feet from the boat I was on.” He observed the creature hover for approximately five seconds before submerging, noting its clear definition against the choppy water, which convinced him it was not merely a result of the current.
April: Fins and Large Shapes Spotted
April proved to be an active month for potential Nessie sightings. On the 21st, American visitor Sara Gubicza described seeing a whitish-grey fin, approximately 18 inches in size, moving in the middle of the loch. “The fin size was about an 18 inch triangle and it was whitish gray. As far as how fast it was moving, I’m not really sure as I was on a bus riding by when I saw it. It seemed to be right in the middle of the loch. It wasn’t close to any shore line,” she recounted.
Just two days later, Canadians Margaret Sunstrum and Joan Sweeney reported observing a “large shape crest” in the water, which they likened to a whale. The month concluded with another sighting on April 25th, when Holly Palmer of Worcestershire captured a photograph of an unidentified object on the water’s surface while on a cruise boat.
May: Deep Water Object Captured on Video
On May 18th, Nickolas Wiegand, visiting from the USA, managed to record a brief video clip during a bus tour. He claims the footage shows the creature deep within the water, at a considerable distance from the shore. Wiegand commented, “You can clearly see a dark image of something breaking the water surface as we drove by. The object is relatively large, gauging the distance from where we were on the bus to the distance of the water, using road signs on shore to gauge what was the size of whatever was in the water.”
Webcam Captures Mysterious Activity
A further intriguing observation was made through one of the live webcams that continuously monitor Loch Ness. Eoin O’Faodhagain recorded footage from a webcam operated by Visit Inverness Loch Ness, situated at the Clansman Hotel. In the description for a YouTube video of the event, O’Faodhagain wrote, “Black object rises and sinks 4 times against the current, captured on VILN Clansman Webcam at 17.20pm on the 05/03/2026. There was calm conditions with a slight ripple current moving north, object moving south.” This webcam sighting adds another layer to the ongoing fascination with the legendary aquatic inhabitant.
