Madonna and Geena Davis reunited at Coachella, marking 34 years since they starred together in the 1992 classic A League of Their Own. The 67-year-old singer and the 70-year-old Oscar winner appeared separately during Sabrina Carpenter’s headlining set on April 17 before meeting backstage.
Heartwarming Backstage Moment
Davis captured the reunion in a photo shared on her Instagram, captioning it: ‘Mae – so happy to see you again! Love, Dottie.’ The message nods to her character Dorothy ‘Dottie’ Hinson and Madonna’s Mae Mordabito. Fans flooded the comments with emotion, one writing, ‘OMG!! Dottie & Mae!! I Love this!!’ Another noted, ‘There’s no crying in baseball but we’re crying at this photo.’
Additional reactions included: ‘THERE’S NO AGING IN BASEBALL! Both look gorgeous.’ And ‘I’m not crying. You’re crying. And there’s no crying in baseball.’ One fan admitted, ‘I’m in tears.’
Madonna sported a stylish pink bustier dress and sunglasses, while Davis wore a brown button-up shirt and blue jeans.
Film’s Lasting Legacy
A League of Their Own also features Rosie O’Donnell, Lori Petty, and Tom Hanks. Inspired by the Rockford Peaches of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, the film grossed $132.4 million worldwide against a $40 million budget.
Surprise Stage Appearances
Madonna joined Carpenter onstage near the end of her set, performing duets of ‘Vogue’ (1990) and ‘Like a Prayer’ (1989). Emerging from beneath the stage, she remarked, ‘Wow, thank you… Sabrina, thank you so much for inviting me on your show.’
Carpenter replied, ‘No thanks needed, Madonna,’ as they held hands. Madonna continued, ‘Well, I have a few things I want to get off my chest.’ Reflecting on her history, she added, ‘So, 20 years ago today I performed at Coachella. I was in the dance tent, and it was the first time I performed Confessions on a Dance Floor part one in America. It was such a thrill – and it’s a thrill to be back. It’s a full circle moment, you know? Very meaningful for me.’
She urged the crowd, ‘Let’s try to be together. Let’s try to avoid disagreements. And to that point, the great thing about music is that it brings people together.’
Davis made a cameo as an older version of Carpenter, delivering a monologue from a classic car. Fans praised her appearance, especially after Susan Sarandon, her Thelma & Louise co-star, played the role the previous weekend.
Performance Controversy
Some viewers accused Madonna of lip-syncing during her duet, labeling her a ‘fraud’ online. One referenced Elton John’s past comment on her performances. Madonna wore a purple corset and tiny shorts, aligning with promotion for her upcoming album Confessions on a Dance Floor: Part II, releasing July 3.
