Man Sentenced to Four Decades for Fatal Shooting of Constable

Fatal Encounter During Repossession Attempt

The incident occurred on June 16, 2025, when Constable Keith Smith was dispatched to Sushames’ residence in North Motton. Constable Smith was present to deliver a repossession notice due to years of unpaid mortgage payments. Court proceedings in May revealed that Sushames had communicated with authorities the day prior, indicating he was aware of the impending visit.

Sequence of Events Captured on Body Camera

Footage from a body-worn camera belonging to Constable Smith’s partner, Sergeant Gavin Rigby, documented the confrontation. The video showed Sushames concealed behind a blue Ford Falcon in a carport, armed with a rifle. As Constable Smith approached, he inquired, “How are you mate?” Moments later, two gunshots were audible.

Prior Threats Alleged

During the court proceedings, it was also presented that Sushames had allegedly informed a friend he would “kill anyone” who attempted to repossess his home. Constable Smith sustained fatal injuries from shots to the back and head.

Further details are expected to emerge.
