In a dominant performance at Manchester’s Co-Op Live arena, 21-year-old British heavyweight Moses Itauma knocked out previously unstopped American Jermaine Franklin in the fifth round, marking a pivotal step toward world title contention.

Achieving the Impossible

Itauma, hailing from Chatham in Kent, overwhelmed Franklin with precision power punches over four rounds and 1 minute 33 seconds. Franklin, who had gone the distance against Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte on prior UK visits, absorbed heavy punishment but ultimately crumpled face-down on the canvas after a devastating left uppercut followed by a straight right.

The victory confirms Itauma’s status as a rising star in the heavyweight division. Promoter Frank Warren hailed his potential, pledging a world title opportunity soon, possibly against the winner of the upcoming WBO belt clash between Fabio Wardley and Daniel Dubois at the same venue.

Fight Breakdown

Itauma set the tone early, staggering Franklin into the ropes with sharp blows in the first round. Franklin’s robust frame weathered the storm in round two, but a vicious right hand dropped him in the third. Round four saw Itauma mix combinations with power shots, while Franklin landed minor counters.

The end came swiftly in the fifth as Itauma’s uppercut pitched Franklin toward the canvas, sealed by a crushing right hand.

Post-Fight Reactions

Itauma reflected on his homecoming triumph: “I’ve had a lovely time. This is where I won my first national title. We come here seven years later, and I’m picking up a win over Franklin. I tried to knock him out in the first or second round, but maybe not today. So I went back to the basics, and the knockout just came. I’m just a young boy chasing a dream.”

Former light-middleweight world champion Liam Smith praised the performance on X: “He’s some fighter this kid. I’m putting it out there, I think he beats Usyk.”

Heavyweight Horizon

As Itauma grows into the division, eyes turn to major UK clashes, including Deontay Wilder vs. Derek Chisora and Tyson Fury vs. Arslanbek Makhmudov. With big-city rivalries and potential undisputed title shots on the horizon, Itauma positions himself as a prime contender against champions like Oleksandr Usyk.
