Humid Conditions Challenge Players Across NRL Round 1

Round 1 of the NRL delivered intense humidity that turned warm-ups into saunas and left players collapsing from cramps late in matches. Queensland-based teams, best acclimated to such steam-bath conditions, surprisingly suffered defeats across the board.

South Sydney Edges Dolphins in Wet Thriller

South Sydney secured a 40-30 victory over the Dolphins on Sunday amid relentless rain. Smaller players like Jye Gray, Peter Mamouzelos, and Bud Sullivan proved elusive, making the ball harder to grasp than a slippery soap bar. Lachlan Hubner sealed the win with a decisive try, evading tackles reminiscent of past slippery plays. Dolphins defenders missed 35 tackles, struggling throughout the afternoon.

Broncos Shut Out by Dominant Penrith

Penrith blanked the Broncos on Friday night, holding them scoreless while Brisbane dropped the ball 19 times. The premiers started strongly but both sides faltered with errors in the messiest game of the round. Penrith’s return to form shone through, though assessing their edge against such opposition proved challenging.

Spoon of the Week: Broncos

The Broncos claimed the unwanted spoon, marking the round’s poorest performance with zero points and frequent mishandles.

Storm and Sharks Shine Bright

Melbourne Storm clicked into top gear, as they do each season, thanks to coach Craig Bellamy’s meticulous preparation. Cronulla Sharks dazzled with Brayden Trindall and Will Kennedy flying high, showcasing the league’s most improved spine.

Canberra Prevails in Golden Point Drama

Reigning minor premiers Canberra outlasted Manly at Brookvale, winning via Ethan Sanders’ field goal in golden point. Manly dominated early possession and relied on Tolu Koula’s late brilliance, but Canberra’s precise ball movement in pouring rain controlled most of the match. Emerging talents like Ethan Strange, Kaeo Weekes, Xavier Savage, Noah Martin, and Sanders impressed.

Premier of the Week: Canberra Raiders

Canberra stood out, continuing their strong trajectory from the previous season.

Bulldogs Pull Off Surprise Win

St George Illawarra Dragons fell despite a controversial refereeing decision, having squandered earlier opportunities. Bulldogs emerged as the team defying expectations, positioning themselves to win games they shouldn’t.

Roosters Stumble Against Warriors

Sydney Roosters lost to the Warriors, mirroring past issues with indiscipline and dropped balls. A 11-4 penalty count favored the visitors amid close calls, but coach Trent Robinson dismissed excuses. Warriors exploited defensive gaps on Daly Cherry-Evans’ side, while Roosters’ kicking game lagged (17 kicks for 283m vs Warriors’ 18 for 528m). Questions linger over the Walker-Cherry-Evans pairing early in the season.

Trials vs Round 1: A Fine Line

Teams like Melbourne, Canberra, Penrith, and Warriors disappointed in trials but excelled in round 1. Gold Coast Titans peaked early in preseason, highlighting the narrow margin between preparation and performance.
