Hanson Targets Public Servants Over Gender Stance

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has declared her intention to dismiss two senior public servants, citing their perceived adherence to “transgender ideology.” The announcement came during her inaugural address to the National Press Club in Canberra.

Critique of ‘Transgender Campaign’

Hanson opened her speech by criticizing the Nine Network and the practice of “Welcome to Country,” advocating for Australia to adopt a “monoculture” rather than a multicultural society. She asserted the existence of a “transgender campaign” that allows individuals to self-identify as a different gender. She specifically named the Sex Discrimination Commissioner and the head of the Human Rights Commission as individuals she would terminate if in government.

Focus on Sex Discrimination Commissioner’s Remarks

The Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Dr. Anna Cody, previously stated in May that transgender women could face unlawful discrimination related to “potential pregnancy.” This statement occurred amidst ongoing political debates regarding the definition of womanhood and the legal recognition of sex and gender in Australia. A significant Federal Court ruling in the Tickle v Giggle case also preceded these discussions.

Germaine Greer Quote and Broader Criticism

Hanson also referenced a 2015 BBC interview with Australian feminist Germaine Greer, quoting, “Just because you lop off your penis and then wear a dress doesn’t make you a woman.” The One Nation leader argued that “almost every instrument of government is dedicated to a transgender ideology which seeks to redefine humanity.” She clarified that her opposition is not to transgender individuals themselves, but to transgender women participating in women’s sports or using women’s changing rooms, and similarly for transgender men.

Government Organizations Under Scrutiny

Hanson criticized government organizations for failing to define gender based on “biological truth.” She identified several entities, including the Human Rights Commission, the Sex Discrimination Commissioner, the AIDS Council of New South Wales, various “regulatory authorities,” the Office for Women, and significant portions of the Labor, Liberal, and Green parties. She characterized the “transgender movement” as pervasive, comparing its reach to that of “militant Islam,” and stated her intent to prevent its influence on redefining humanity and biology.

Policy Stances and Protest

In addition to her remarks on gender issues, Hanson outlined One Nation’s support for nuclear power and the expansion of coal and gas generation. She also recounted a past Senate debate where she proposed a national plebiscite on immigration, which she claims was dismissed due to its perceived complexity, highlighting what she called the political establishment’s “contempt for the Australian people.” During her address, Hanson’s speech was briefly interrupted by a banner protesting her stance on minimum wage increases, which was quickly removed by staff. Outside the venue, demonstrators held signs with messages like “Migrants are welcome, racists are not.” Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce was present and reportedly assisted with the preparation of Hanson’s address and the handling of media questions.
