Moorland Engulfed by Flames as Temperatures Soar
A significant wildfire has erupted in the Peak District, engulfing moorland in Glossop, Derbyshire. The blaze comes as Britain grapples with an intense heatwave, shattering previous temperature records for June.
Hottest June Day on Record
Meteorological data confirms that the mercury climbed to a scorching 36.7C this afternoon. This surpasses the previous record of 36.1C, which was recorded in Gosport, Hampshire, just yesterday. The current heatwave is proving to be unprecedented, with forecasters anticipating further temperature increases.
Red Weather Warning Extended
Expectations are for temperatures to reach as high as 38C tomorrow, with even shaded areas expected to experience 36C. Consequently, a rare red weather warning for extreme heat remains in effect across substantial portions of England and Wales, signaling a critical risk to public health and infrastructure.
Emergency Services Respond to Blaze
Fire crews are actively working to combat the wildfire near Wood Head Reservoir. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue confirmed their involvement, stating, “We are currently assisting Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service at a fire on the moorland in Glossop, close to neighbouring Tameside.”
The fire has generated a substantial smoke plume, prompting authorities to issue advisories for nearby residents. “Due to the large smoke plume, nearby residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed,” the spokesperson added.
Visuals from the scene show extensive flames and thick smoke billowing from the affected moorland. Aerial footage captures a helicopter surveying the wildfire as it burns perilously close to forested areas.
