Pearl Abyss has issued a formal apology after players discovered AI-generated artwork and assets within Crimson Desert, its new open-world title. The assets appear in various interiors across the game’s map, sparking frustration amid ongoing debates about generative AI in gaming.
Details of the Oversight
The Korean developer confirms the assets originated from early development stages. Experimental AI tools created some 2D visual props during initial iterations, but the team planned to replace them with custom work aligned to quality standards.
“During development, some 2D visual props were created as part of early-stage iteration using experimental AI generative tools,” Pearl Abyss stated. “However, our intention has always been for any such assets to be replaced, following final work and review by our art and development teams, with work that aligned with our quality standards and creative direction.”
The company acknowledges that a few assets slipped into the final release unintentionally. “We have identified that some of these assets were unintentionally included in the final release. This is not in line with our internal standards, and we take full responsibility for it. We sincerely apologize for these oversights,” Pearl Abyss added.
Developer’s Response and Updates
Pearl Abyss actively addresses player feedback with rapid updates to fix Crimson Desert issues. This incident appears isolated, without impacting core gameplay. Fans can expect the removal of these assets in upcoming patches, reflecting the developer’s commitment to high standards.
