A Microsoft executive has developed a lightweight utility called PeekDesktop that enhances Windows 11 by enabling users to peek at the desktop with a simple click.
How PeekDesktop Works
PeekDesktop allows users to click on any empty spot on the desktop wallpaper to instantly minimize all open windows, revealing the desktop underneath. A second click on a blank area restores the windows. This mirrors the ‘click wallpaper to reveal desktop’ functionality in macOS Sonoma, offering a quick way to access desktop icons amid multiple open applications.
The tool runs efficiently in the system tray, consuming less than 2MB of resources. It supports Arm-based laptops like those with Snapdragon X processors, as well as systems with AMD and Intel CPUs.
Why It’s a Game-Changer
Windows 11 already provides keyboard shortcuts like Windows key + D to minimize windows or Windows key + M for similar effects. However, PeekDesktop’s mouse-based approach proves more intuitive, especially for users juggling numerous windows. Scott Hanselman, Microsoft VP and member of the technical staff, designed the feature to match macOS behavior precisely. On X, Hanselman explained, “so Mac folks feel comfortable.”
This simple addition highlights untapped potential in Windows 11’s desktop management, potentially paving the way for official integration in future updates.
