A Prince Edward Island-founded organization dedicated to fostering the development of natural and bio-based products has received a substantial $50 million in federal funding. Natural Products Canada (NPC), which began in Charlottetown and now supports businesses nationwide, will use this investment to bolster startups and expanding companies focused on creating sustainable alternatives to petrochemical goods.

Boosting Canada’s Bio-Based Economy

The significant funding injection, announced recently, is poised to make a considerable impact on Canada’s burgeoning bioeconomy. Shelley King, founder and CEO of Natural Products Canada, highlighted the importance of the investment, stating that the $50 million will significantly aid small and medium-sized enterprises within the Canadian bioeconomy. She expressed particular pride that the announcement came in Charlottetown, the very city where NPC was established a decade ago.

Natural Products Canada’s primary mission involves assisting emerging companies in developing bio-based products. These products are designed to be environmentally friendly, offering benefits for people, animals, and the planet, while also serving as viable replacements for traditional petroleum-based items. King emphasized that these natural alternatives are crucial for a more sustainable future.

Strategic Allocation of Funds

According to Heath MacDonald, the federal Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister and Member of Parliament for Malpeque, P.E.I., the $50 million investment will be directed towards two key areas: initial seed funding for startups and support for processing capabilities to help companies scale their operations. MacDonald noted that this support is available to businesses across Canada, including those in Prince Edward Island.

This investment aligns with the federal government’s broader strategy to enhance national food security. MacDonald indicated that Natural Products Canada is expected to play a pivotal role in these national efforts. Furthermore, the initiative holds significant potential for job creation. MacDonald pointed out that approximately one-third of the roughly 335 companies currently collaborating with Natural Products Canada are located in Atlantic Canada. The organization projects the creation of around 550 jobs nationwide by 2031, with a substantial portion, about one-third, anticipated to be in the Atlantic region.

NPC’s Track Record and Support Model

Over the past ten years, Natural Products Canada has been instrumental in supporting innovation, having assisted approximately 1,800 companies across the country. Currently, NPC is working with six companies based in Prince Edward Island, demonstrating its continued commitment to its founding region.

The newly allocated funds will be directly invested in companies aiming to expand their production capacity or enhance their management expertise. Businesses can apply for support ranging from $150,000 to $5 million, tailored to their specific growth requirements. King provided an example, illustrating how NPC could assist a company developing a food product in a small-scale setting, like a kitchen or at a farmers’ market, helping them transition to larger-scale production.

Supporting Innovation and Growth

Crystal Read, senior vice-president of operations at Nature’s Crops International, a specialty oils supplier with operations in Kensington, P.E.I., underscored the value of this funding for both nascent and established businesses. Nature’s Crops International has previously partnered with Natural Products Canada, benefiting from support to explore new product avenues, develop revenue streams, and derive value from byproducts at their processing facility.

Read commended Natural Products Canada for its significant contributions to the economies of Prince Edward Island, Atlantic Canada, and Canada as a whole. She believes the new funding will empower startups, new ventures, and existing companies to pursue continued growth and innovation. Read also encouraged other emerging businesses to seek assistance from NPC, describing the organization’s support as potentially decisive for a company’s success.

The Future of Natural Products

The $50 million federal investment represents a significant endorsement of the bio-based product sector and Natural Products Canada’s proven ability to nurture innovation. By providing crucial financial and operational support, NPC aims to accelerate the transition away from petrochemical dependence, fostering a more sustainable and economically vibrant future for Canadian businesses and the environment.

This initiative is expected to drive the development of a wide array of natural products, from advanced biomaterials to sustainable food ingredients and eco-friendly consumer goods. The focus on scaling production and enhancing management capabilities will ensure that promising innovations can reach the market effectively, creating jobs and contributing to Canada’s green economy goals.
