The Protection Division on Wednesday shot down a U.S. Customs and Border Safety drone in southwest Texas, federal officers confirmed.

A U.S. official stated a laser weapon was used to down the drone, which occurred within the space of Fort Hancock, a small group situated on the U.S.-Mexico border.

“This reported engagement occurred when the Division of Conflict employed counter-unmanned plane system authorities to mitigate a seemingly threatening unmanned aerial system working inside army airspace,” the Protection Division, CBP and the FAA stated in a joint assertion late Thursday night time. The Division of Conflict is the White Home’s most well-liked time period for the Protection Division.

The FAA stated the flight restriction was not impacting industrial flights.

Democratic Reps. Rick Larsen, André Carson and Bennie Thompson, all members of the Home Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, stated in a joint assertion, “Our heads are exploding over the information that DoD reportedly shot down a Customs and Border Safety drone utilizing a excessive danger counter-unmanned plane system.” They pointed to lack of coordination between the businesses. 

This marks the second time this month that the U.S. army’s use of drones close to the southern border in Texas has prompted airspace flight restrictions.
