Oscar Piastri’s future in Formula 1 remains a focal point of discussion, with speculation mounting that he could depart McLaren for Red Bull amid claims his manager, Mark Webber, is dissatisfied with the team’s handling of the driver.
Potential Red Bull Move Gains Traction
A possible vacancy at Red Bull emerges as Max Verstappen’s long-term plans stay uncertain. Talks of a driver swap have circulated since Verstappen’s longtime race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, confirmed his transfer to McLaren by year’s end.
Analyst Jessica Yates predicts Piastri could head to Red Bull, highlighting Webber’s strong ties to the team. “I don’t think it will be a straight swap but I could see Oscar Piastri ending up at Red Bull,” Yates stated. “I think that makes a lot of sense. In car racing where there’s smoke there’s fire. Mark Webber is a shrewd operator, he’s got very close connections with that team. If that’s out there I think it’s probably happening behind the scenes.”
Yates added that the situation signals underlying tensions at McLaren, where the team appears focused primarily on Lando Norris. “I don’t think it indicates Max is going to McLaren necessarily but what I think it indicates is that they’re not happy there. And that McLaren have probably put all their eggs in Lando’s basket, the writing’s on the wall, depending on how this year shakes out.”
Insights from Juan Pablo Montoya
Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya echoed the sentiment, noting Webber’s frustration. “From what I’m hearing Mark Webber is not happy the way things are going for Oscar at McLaren,” Montoya said. “A lot of times people that look after drivers will run a story like that just to stir up the pot and put pressure on the team.”
Montoya emphasized Piastri’s marketability: “Piastri would find a seat anywhere. There’s a suggestion that Max and Piastri could do a straight swap. That makes some sense. Webber raced for Red Bull before. He knows Red Bull. So that would be a sensible thing. That would be a logical thing to do. The question is, would McLaren be comfortable spending the money that Max would want?”
Piastri Affirms Commitment to McLaren
Despite the rumors, Piastri recently expressed satisfaction with McLaren during an appearance on the High Performance Podcast. He confirmed no resentment after finishing behind teammate Lando Norris in last year’s F1 championship.
Piastri also voiced confidence in the team and car, even after a challenging season start. Recent podium finishes in his last two races underscore his strong form.
