Ray Martin Confronts AI Doppelgänger in New SBS Documentary
SHARE

Veteran Australian journalist Ray Martin will confront an artificial intelligence-generated version of himself in a new documentary titled Ray Martin is Misinformed. This program aims to explore the profound implications, both positive and negative, of the rapidly advancing field of artificial intelligence. The documentary is a key component of the SBS network’s programming lineup for the upcoming year, revealed during their annual upfront presentation in Sydney.

Exploring the AI Frontier with Ray Martin

The documentary will feature an AI construct, dubbed ‘Ray-I’, created to mimic Martin’s voice, mannerisms, and speech patterns. Joseph Maxwell, SBS’s Head of Factual, described the unsettling experience for Martin, noting that as the AI model develops, it becomes increasingly indistinguishable from the real Martin. “By the end of the show, you cannot tell who’s Ray and who’s Ray-I,” Maxwell stated. He elaborated that the AI not only captures Martin’s vocal nuances but also his characteristic pauses and even a sense of his playful tone, challenging the notion that AI lacks personality.

Ray Martin is Misinformed is positioned not just as a technological demonstration but as a critical examination of truth and reporting in the age of AI. Maxwell highlighted the relevance to Martin’s career, stating, “Ray’s entire world has been journalism, and now journalism is under threat like it’s never been before. And Ray-I in some ways represents that threat. But in some ways it represents a solution, too.” The documentary seeks to provoke thought on how AI might reshape the media landscape and the very concept of verifiable information.

SBS Unveils Diverse Factual and Sports Programming

Beyond the AI-focused documentary, SBS announced a robust slate of factual and sports content. A significant acquisition is the broadcast rights for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. This follows the network’s reported success with the recent World Cup, which attracted an estimated 8 million Australian viewers.

Jane Palfreyman, SBS Managing Director, emphasized the network’s long-standing connection to football, referring to SBS as the “spiritual home of the world game” for nearly five decades. She articulated the sport’s role in reflecting Australia’s multicultural identity and aspirations, stating, “Football has always reflected the Australia we are, and the Australia we aspire to be, a nation shaped by many cultures, communities, and stories.”

Key Documentary Highlights:

  • Bondi: Directed by Dan Goldberg, this documentary offers a minute-by-minute account of the events of December 14, 2025, told entirely from the perspectives of those present. It aims to explore themes of antisemitism, social cohesion, and multicultural Australia.
  • 2.6 Seconds: A four-part series directed by Darren Dale, co-founder of Blackfella Films, examining the 2019 killing of Kumanjayi Walker by Northern Territory police officer Zachary Rolfe. Maxwell described it as a “landmark, premium true-crime show” that offers a gripping and distinctive look at Australia.
  • Hilton Bombing Documentary: Marc Fennell revisits the 1978 Hilton Bombing, interviewing Evan Pederick, the man who confessed and was convicted, but whose testimony was later questioned.

Reality and Social Issue Programming

The popular survival reality series Alone Australia is set to return, with contestants facing the harsh conditions of the Arctic Circle. This season will feature a new location and earlier onset of winter, with the added element that participants will be permitted to hunt for food, though the hunting of sacred reindeer will be prohibited. “There will be no reindeer harmed in the making of this show, I guarantee you that,” Maxwell assured.

Addressing the critical issue of homelessness, the three-part series Homeless 300, presented by Samuel Johnson, will investigate the challenges faced by those without shelter. The title refers to the 300 Australians reportedly turned away from homeless shelters each night. Maxwell noted Johnson’s passionate engagement with the subject, highlighting the presenter’s shock and determination to explore national solutions. This series revisits a theme previously explored by SBS in 2017 with Filthy Rich and Homeless, underscoring the persistent nature of the problem.

Scripted Content and International Acquisitions

While the factual slate is extensive, SBS announced a limited number of locally produced scripted series under its Digital Originals program. These include the adventure drama Mangrove Mansion, the supernatural First Nations story Pretty Deadly, and the social media comedy Tantrum. The combined runtime of these three productions has raised questions about the state of Australian scripted content on free-to-air television.

In contrast, the network will bolster its schedule with international dramas. Notable acquisitions include Legacy of Spies, based on John le Carré’s works and starring Matthew Macfadyen, Charlie Hunnam, and Hugh Laurie. Viewers can also anticipate new seasons of Blue Lights, Rogue Heroes, and the satire The Audacity. Additionally, the free-to-air premiere of The Lowdown, starring Ethan Hawke, and the Irish crime drama Tall Tales and Murder with Aidan Gillen, are set to be featured.

SBS will continue its tradition of broadcasting major international events, including Eurovision, and remains the primary free-to-air home for cycling coverage in Australia.
