Reform UK Receives Record £36 Million Donation from Crypto Billionaire
SHARE

Reform UK, the political party led by veteran Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage, has received a staggering donation of £36 million (approximately $A68 million) from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne. This substantial contribution, disclosed in an article published by The Telegraph, matches an equally record-breaking pledge made by fellow crypto investor Ben Delo just a day prior. The dual donations bring the total received by Reform UK from these two individuals to £72 million (around $A136 million) within a 48-hour period, significantly bolstering the party’s financial resources as it prepares for the upcoming general election, constitutionally due by January 2029.

Unprecedented Funding Boost for Reform UK

The combined sum of £72 million far surpasses the expenditure of both the governing Labour Party and the opposition Conservative Party during the most recent general election campaign, according to figures from the Electoral Commission. This influx of capital is expected to provide Reform UK with the necessary means to effectively campaign and appeal to voters in the lead-up to the next election. The party’s standing in opinion polls had reportedly seen a decline amidst recent allegations concerning irregularities in its funding practices, which Reform UK has consistently denied.

Christopher Harborne, who is already recognized as Reform UK’s most significant donor, stated that Ben Delo’s earlier pledge had motivated him to make a matching contribution. Harborne articulated his expectations for the donations, writing in his article, “What do I expect in return for my donations? Nothing. No peerage, no policy change, just a party that is ready for government.” This sentiment suggests a desire to support the party’s readiness for governance rather than seeking personal political influence.

Background on Donors and Reform UK’s Stance

Ben Delo, the British co-founder of the cryptocurrency trading platform BitMEX, made his £36 million donation on the Friday preceding Harborne’s. Delo’s pledge alone had already eclipsed the previous record donation, which was £10 million (approximately $A19 million) bequeathed to the Conservative Party by the late British businessman John Sainsbury, as recorded in the Electoral Commission’s database. Delo expressed his hope that the substantial funding would enable Reform UK to dedicate more time to strategic preparation for government rather than continuous fundraising, emphasizing the need for resources to compete effectively against the established Labour and Conservative parties.

Nigel Farage welcomed the significant backing from both Delo and Harborne, stating in a released statement, “I am honoured and humbled that Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne have shown such confidence in Reform.” He added, “Both men know that we are the only party that can turn the country around and win the next general election. Thanks to their generosity, we are now able to fight that election on a level playing field.”

Funding Allegations and Investigations

The timing of these record donations is notable, occurring shortly after Reform UK faced allegations regarding the party’s funding. Specifically, reports emerged that two senior aides to Nigel Farage had allegedly facilitated a foreign donor’s contribution towards political polling. Reform UK has vehemently denied these claims, characterizing the situation as a hoax orchestrated by climate activists.

Earlier in September, the party announced that its head of policy, James Orr, and Farage adviser, Dan Jukes, had stepped down pending an internal investigation. This action followed an undercover investigation broadcast by Channel 4, which alleged that Reform UK might have contravened electoral law by arranging for a U.S. company to finance polling commissioned by the party. Farage has publicly asserted that the party has “broken no laws” and has not accepted any improper donations.

In response to these allegations, the Labour Party has formally requested the police to investigate potential offenses related to the claims. Law enforcement authorities have confirmed they are currently assessing the information provided to them. Concurrently, the Electoral Commission stated it is reviewing the allegations and is in communication with law enforcement agencies to coordinate efforts.

Reform UK’s Proposed Policies on Cryptocurrency

Should Reform UK attain power, the party has outlined proposals aimed at increasing the adoption of cryptocurrency within the UK. These potential policies include reducing capital gains tax specifically for digital assets and establishing a Bitcoin reserve fund managed by the Bank of England. The substantial financial backing from prominent figures in the cryptocurrency sector may signal a strategic alignment between the party’s policy ambitions and the interests of its major donors.

Conclusion: A New Financial Landscape for Reform UK

The unprecedented donations from Christopher Harborne and Ben Delo have dramatically reshaped the financial landscape for Reform UK, providing it with substantial resources to contest the next general election. While the party navigates ongoing scrutiny regarding its funding practices, these contributions underscore a significant show of confidence from key figures within the cryptocurrency industry. The substantial financial injection positions Reform UK to potentially challenge the established political parties on a more equal footing, with its policy platform, particularly concerning digital assets, likely to gain further prominence.
