Rory McIlroy leverages his deep familiarity with Augusta National to tie for the lead after the first round of the Masters, posting a five-under-par 67.
Course Knowledge Fuels McIlroy’s Surge
The Masters thrives on its unchanging traditions and layout, from the vibrant greens to the iconic water hazard on the 12th hole. McIlroy, last year’s champion, capitalizes on this consistency, carding a bogey-free back nine to match Sam Burns at the top.
Burns, in his fifth Masters appearance, delivers a precise 67 highlighted by the day’s best approach shots. Emerging talents like Ludvig Aberg, Tom Kim, and Akshay Bhatia share similar potential, but McIlroy’s proven major-winning experience sets him apart.
McIlroy Battles Nerves to Claim Clubhouse Lead
Despite completing his career Grand Slam last year, McIlroy admits the pressure persists. As he teed off on the first hole under bright sunshine, familiar nerves surfaced, causing a slight tremble.
“That’s a good thing. That’s why we want to be here,” McIlroy said afterward. “We want to be able to try to play our best golf when we’re feeling like that.”
His start remained even through seven holes, but he ignited with five birdies over the final 11, exceeding his own two-under expectation. Though fairway accuracy ranked outside the top 100, McIlroy excelled in scrambling.
“I used my head… I got up-and-down when I needed to,” he explained. “I didn’t compound mistakes. Again, that’s just a learning curve that you have to go through around here, and I did it well today.”
Competitors Trail in Contention
Justin Rose, last year’s playoff runner-up to McIlroy, reached five under before late bogeys dropped him to two under, joining Scottie Scheffler, Shane Lowry, and Xander Schauffele three strokes back.
McIlroy believes prior success eases the path forward. “I do think winning a Masters makes it easier to win your second one,” he stated. “It’s hard to say because there’s still shots out there that you feel a little bit tight with… But I think it’s easier for me to make those swings and not worry about where it goes when I know that I can go back to the Champions Locker Room afterwards and put my green jacket on.”
