Royal Mourning Veils: Tradition and Significance at Funerals
SHARE

Royal women traditionally don black mourning veils at the funerals of sovereigns, a practice steeped in symbolism and respect, though not strictly obligatory. This custom was notably observed at the recent state funeral for King Harald of Norway in Oslo, where several European royals appeared with veiled heads. The practice serves a dual purpose: to signify respect for the deceased and the solemnity of the occasion, and to offer a degree of privacy, shielding the wearer from intense public scrutiny during a period of grief.

The Significance of Mourning Veils in Royal Tradition

The veils worn by royal women are typically crafted from delicate materials such as lace, tulle, or fine netting, allowing the wearer to see while obscuring their features. This tradition has deep historical roots, famously exemplified by Queen Victoria, who wore black for forty years following the death of her husband, Prince Albert. Her prolonged period of mourning set a precedent that has influenced royal sartorial choices for generations.

More recently, Princess Diana was seen wearing a black veil at the funeral of Grace Kelly in 1982. Following this lineage, Catherine, Princess of Wales, has also adopted the practice, wearing veils at the funerals of Prince Philip in 2021 and Queen Elizabeth II in 2022. These instances highlight the enduring nature of the mourning veil as a symbol of respect within royal circles.

Evolution of Royal Funeral Attire

The practice of wearing black head-to-toe is generally reserved for funerals and periods of remembrance. It’s also a practical consideration for royals, as a black outfit is often a standard item packed when travelling internationally, ensuring they are appropriately dressed should a family death occur while abroad. This preparedness underscores the importance of maintaining decorum and respecting tradition, even when away from home.

Marta Callejo, an image consultant and protocol expert, has noted that mourning customs can vary between different royal houses, such as the British and Norwegian monarchies. She explained that the primary aim at a royal funeral is not to draw attention to the individual mourner but to project a collective image of respect and solemnity. “At a royal funeral, the protocol doesn’t aim to highlight the person following it, but rather to build a collective image, fundamentally one of respect,” Callejo stated. “I think that, nowadays, we could say that protocol doesn’t consist of applying a list of prohibitions, but rather in understanding what each ceremony needs and adapting our image to it.” The ultimate goal, she added, is to “visually disappear behind the meaning of the act,” emphasizing simplicity and appropriateness through clean silhouettes, structured coats, dresses, or suits.

Royal Attendance at King Harald’s Funeral

The state funeral of King Harald, who passed away on August 28th at the age of 89, saw significant attendance from European royalty. Prince William represented his father, King Charles III, while the Princess Royal, Anne, attended personally as the godmother to the new King Haakon. The Norwegian Royal Family, including Queen Sonja, King Haakon, and Queen Mette-Marit, were central figures in the service and subsequent balcony appearance.

Among the international representatives were members of the Swedish, Danish, and Dutch royal houses. Notably absent was Queen Margrethe of Denmark, who was hospitalized recently due to a blood clot and dehydration. The Danish Royal House announced that the 86-year-old monarch would be recuperating and would not be travelling to Norway for the funeral.

The Role of Veils in Modern Royal Mourning

At King Harald’s funeral, Queen Sonja, the late King’s widow, wore a traditional black lace mourning veil. Queen Mette-Marit, the King’s daughter-in-law, and Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, his granddaughter, also wore subtle netted veils. Other attendees, such as Queen Mary of Denmark and Princess Charlene of Monaco, were also observed adhering to this elegant, yet somber, tradition. These veils, often attached to a headband or hat, typically cover the face partially, allowing for visibility while maintaining an air of dignified reserve.

The inclusion of veils in the dress code for royal funerals reflects a continuity of tradition, blending historical significance with contemporary expressions of grief and respect. While not a mandatory requirement, the practice remains a poignant visual cue of mourning within the royal family, signifying a shared commitment to tradition and remembrance during times of loss.

Understanding Royal Protocol and Dress Codes

The dress code for royal funerals emphasizes a collective presentation of respect, rather than individual prominence. This involves adhering to specific sartorial norms that align with the solemnity of the occasion. Beyond veils, wearing black is a fundamental aspect of this protocol. For those holding military rank, wearing a uniform is also customary, though exceptions can occur if specific orders or regalia are not applicable, as was the case with Prince William, who did not wear a uniform as he does not hold the Order of St. Olav.

The interpretation of protocol in modern times, as suggested by experts, leans towards understanding the needs of the ceremony and adapting one’s appearance accordingly. This approach ensures that attire is not only respectful but also contributes to the overall dignified atmosphere of the event. The aim is to blend in, allowing the focus to remain on the memorial and the legacy of the departed, rather than on the mourners themselves.

Succession and Royal Lineage

Following King Harald’s passing, his son Haakon ascended to the throne as King of Norway. His wife, Mette-Marit, now holds the title of Queen Consort. Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra is now the heir apparent to the Norwegian throne, with her younger brother, Prince Sverre Magnus, positioned as second in line. This transition highlights the continuity of the monarchy and the established lines of succession, even amidst the grief of losing a monarch.

The adherence to traditions like the mourning veil, alongside the established protocols for royal funerals, demonstrates the enduring strength of royal customs. These practices serve to unite the family and the wider royal community in shared remembrance, reinforcing the historical and symbolic importance of the monarchy.
