London Mayor Sadiq Khan has launched a comprehensive road safety initiative that includes measures targeting SUV owners. The new Road Vision Zero Action Plan outlines 43 specific actions aimed at minimizing road risks across the capital.
Vision Zero Action Plan Details
Transport for London (TfL) pledges to implement innovative technologies and stricter speed limits to enhance safety. Officials emphasize assessing strategies to address risks from oversized vehicles, particularly SUVs, which are growing in popularity on city streets.
Data indicates these larger cars contribute to higher rates of fatalities and serious injuries in crashes. The plan advances the mayor’s Vision Zero objective through collaboration with the Metropolitan Police Service and local councils.
Potential SUV Restrictions
While exact details remain under review, authorities are exploring road usage charges for SUV drivers. Similar policies exist elsewhere: Paris imposes parking fees up to €18 (£15.50) per hour for SUVs since 2024, and Cardiff councillors approved surcharges for vehicles over 2,400kg following public consultation favoring higher costs for bigger cars.
Political Backlash
City Hall Conservatives have criticized the initiative. Transport spokesperson Thomas Turrell stated: “This is not about making London safer, it is about an ideological agenda. Sadiq Khan’s war on motorists cannot be disguised by claims that he is trying to make the capital safer.”
Mayor’s Response
Sadiq Khan supports the plan, noting: “I’m proud that we have saved lives through the important steps already taken to deliver my Vision Zero goal, making our roads safer more quickly than the rest of the country and equivalent international capitals including New York and Paris. But every death or serious injury on our roads is unacceptable and we must go further and faster to eliminate this heartbreak across the capital.”
