Smartphone ‘Untethering’ Trend: Who Gets to Disconnect?
SHARE

A growing trend sees people seeking to disconnect from their smartphones, with retro accessories and ‘device-free’ events gaining traction. However, this movement towards ‘untethering’ is not universally accessible, highlighting disparities in digital safety and personal circumstances. The desire to create distance from constant connectivity is becoming more pronounced, but the ability to do so varies significantly among individuals.

The Evolution of the Smartphone Connection

For over two decades, mobile phones have been described as creating a ‘snug and intimate technosocial tethering,’ offering continuous connection and mobility. Smartphones, since their inception in 2007, have been meticulously designed for constant human interaction. Their size, weight, and touch interfaces are engineered for comfortable handling and effortless navigation, fostering a deep, almost symbiotic relationship with users. Research participants have often described their smartphones as indispensable extensions of themselves, with one individual stating, ‘I’d be lost without it,’ and another calling it, ‘my world.’ This intimate connection has been cultivated through years of design focused on seamless integration into daily life.

Shifting Towards Distance: The ‘Loosening Grip’

The COVID-19 pandemic inadvertently accelerated a shift in how people perceive their smartphones. Confined to their homes and reliant on laptops and desktop computers for work and social life, many found their smartphone screens less appealing or practical. Some participants in studies reported their phones spending more time on silent or in different rooms altogether. This period highlighted that the intense hand-to-device connection could indeed loosen depending on environmental and circumstantial factors. This observation marked a significant departure from the ‘snug tether’ previously described, suggesting a potential for a more deliberate distancing.

Collective Untethering: Designed Disconnection

More recently, the move to disconnect has become more intentional, organized, and even institutionalized. Several initiatives and products are emerging to facilitate this ‘untethering’:

  • Smartphone-Free Events: Concerts, festivals, and social gatherings are increasingly implementing policies or offering spaces where devices must be put away. Organizations like The Offline Club in Amsterdam host ‘reading raves’ where attendees commit to keeping devices out of sight. Similar events, such as ‘Book Doof’ in Melbourne, also encourage a break from digital distractions.
  • Retro Accessories: Novelty items are appearing that mimic older phone technology. One such gadget, costing around A$20, allows users to plug a corded handset into their smartphone’s charging port, transforming it into a landline-like device. This offers a physical, albeit quirky, separation from the usual way of interacting with a smartphone.
  • Home Docking Solutions: Companies like Coilie offer wall-mounted docks with coiled cords, designed to give smartphones a designated ‘home’ within the house. These products explicitly promise to provide users with ‘a rest’ and a ‘nervous system reset’ by creating a fixed point for the device, reducing the temptation for constant use.
  • Personal Strategies: Individuals are also developing personal methods to manage their device usage. One study participant resorted to locking her smartphone in a drawer at work to avoid distractions from games like Candy Crush, demonstrating a need for physical barriers to curb compulsive usage.

These developments suggest a collective desire to reclaim attention and reduce the constant pull of digital notifications and endless scrolling. The retro accessories, in particular, tap into a nostalgic sentiment while providing a functional solution for creating physical distance.

Untethering: A Privilege, Not a Universal Right

Despite the growing trend of ‘untethering,’ it’s crucial to acknowledge that this option is not available to everyone. For many, particularly women, smartphones serve as vital tools for personal safety. Research indicates that women often rely on their devices to maintain ‘digital safety nets’ when navigating public spaces, especially at night.

These safety nets involve routine practices such as:

  • Asking trusted contacts to ‘text me when you arrive home.’
  • Utilizing location-sharing features like Snapchat’s Snap Map to let friends or family track their whereabouts.
  • Employing dedicated safety applications such as Life360, which can provide real-time location updates and emergency alerts.

For these individuals, the smartphone acts as a critical link to family, partners, and friends, offering a sense of security and connection that is fundamental to their well-being. Therefore, advocating for universal smartphone-free environments or encouraging people to simply ‘switch off’ their devices overlooks the essential role these technologies play in ensuring personal safety for vulnerable populations. The ability to disconnect is, in many ways, a privilege contingent on one’s perceived level of safety and personal circumstances.

The Core Question: Who Gets to Disconnect?

The rise of smartphone-free events and retro disconnection aids prompts a more profound question than simply whether we *should* untether. The critical inquiry is *who* has the agency and the security to do so, and under what specific conditions. While some can opt for a digital detox to improve mental well-being or focus, others depend on their devices for fundamental safety and connection. Recognizing these differing needs and circumstances is essential when discussing the future of our relationship with technology.

Ultimately, the trend towards untethering highlights a complex societal negotiation with digital technology. It underscores the need for solutions that cater to diverse user needs, ensuring that the pursuit of digital well-being does not inadvertently compromise the safety and security of those who rely on their devices the most.
