Former NFL quarterback Craig Morton passed away at 83, the Denver Broncos announced Monday. He died Saturday in California, surrounded by loved ones.
Morton leaves behind his wife Kym, sister, children, and grandchildren.
Distinguished College and Pro Career
Morton starred in football and baseball for the California Golden Bears during his Hall of Fame college tenure. The Cowboys selected him fifth overall in the 1965 NFL Draft.
He contributed to the Dallas Cowboys’ Super Bowl VI victory and later played for the New York Giants before joining the Broncos.
Broncos Leadership and Records
Morton arrived with the Denver Broncos in 1977 and stayed six seasons. He guided the team to its first playoff berth and Super Bowl XII.
By 1982, he set franchise marks with 11,895 passing yards and 74 touchdowns.
The New York Giants stated: “We are saddened to hear of Craig’s passing. He was a great leader and teammate. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
Hall of Fame Recognition
Inductions followed for Morton, including the College Football Hall of Fame in 1992, the Broncos Ring of Fame, and the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame.
