Tuchel Warns England’s Defensive Lapses Could Prove Costly

Thomas Tuchel has issued a stark warning to the England squad, asserting that their current defensive approach is “senseless” and could jeopardize their World Cup aspirations if not rectified. The Three Lions are preparing for a crucial fixture against Ghana in Boston, where a victory would all but secure their progression to the knockout stages, likely as group leaders.

This comes in the wake of a compelling 4-2 triumph over Croatia, a match that garnered significant praise for England’s dynamic attacking display in the second half. However, Tuchel remains grounded, emphasizing that certain elements of their first-half performance against Croatia should serve as a critical learning experience.

Defensive Frailties Highlighted as Wake-Up Call

Tuchel expressed his concern over the team’s tactical approach in the initial stages of the Croatia match. “We need to do things better,” he stated. “We played a back-seven formation which is just not us. Perhaps it is good that we conceded, because it tells us, ‘Let’s not do this again.’ It makes no sense. It doesn’t play to our strengths. We had too many easy ball losses after ball wins, giving it back straight away.”

He further elaborated on areas requiring improvement, particularly concerning possession and attacking transitions. “In possession, there is also stuff to improve. When we accelerate the game, how do we give the man on the ball more options in the gaps and show a bit more confidence? There are things to improve, and the team knows it.”

Despite these criticisms, Tuchel acknowledged the significance of the victory. “But I was also very clear to the team – we had a well-deserved win against a top opponent. We have a lot of positives to take away. We found an answer to adversity. That’s the beauty of it – we don’t need to invent anything new.”

Bellingham’s Integration Praised, Unchanged XI Expected

One of Tuchel’s notable achievements has been the seamless integration of Jude Bellingham into the team. The Real Madrid star, who netted against Croatia, is anticipated to retain his starting position. An unchanged lineup is largely expected, contingent on any late fitness assessments.

Reflecting on Bellingham’s performance, Tuchel commented, “I saw the full potential of Jude and the full commitment. There is no doubt that a competition like this brings out the best in him.” He added, “But it needed improvement, the connection between Jude and Harry (Kane), the connection between Jude and Declan (Rice) and Elliot (Anderson). Jude played fully into our idea and was fully committed to the team spirit, to play in full cohesion with everyone else. He was very important, super reliable.””

Assistant Coach’s Halftime Insights Applauded

Tuchel also expressed his support for assistant coach Anthony Barry’s candid halftime assessments, which were delivered to ITV following the first half against Croatia. “Everyone is speaking about this! I’m so happy if he does that at halftime, and then I don’t have to do it!” Tuchel remarked.

He continued, “I’m so happy if he speaks. You see the quality. The guy is a top coach. He is an inspiration and he pushes me, helps me, and supports me. It’s just top level. I hear a lot of people speaking (about the interview), so he gets a lot of banter for it. I can imagine it makes sense what he said, and he spoke hopefully from his heart and from his knowledge, because he’s just a top coach.””
