Two Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee have called on Lord Peter Mandelson to provide testimony in their investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s sex-trafficking operations. Representatives Robert Garcia and Suhas Subramanyam sent a letter highlighting Mandelson’s extensive social and business connections to the late financier.
Details of the Request
The lawmakers assert that Mandelson possesses vital information about Epstein’s criminal activities and co-conspirators. They seek his participation in a transcribed interview with committee staff to uncover the full scope of the network.
“While you no longer serve as British Ambassador to the United States and have stepped down from the House of Lords, it is clear that you possessed extensive social and business ties to Jeffrey Epstein and hold critical information pertaining to our investigation of Epstein’s operations,” the letter states. “Given the appalling allegations regarding Epstein’s conduct, we request that you make yourself available for a transcribed interview with committee staff regarding the crimes of Jeffrey Epstein and his co-conspirators.”
Mandelson must respond by February 27. The committee lacks authority to compel his appearance as a foreign national.
Mandelson’s Response and Background
Mandelson has voiced regret over his ongoing ties to Epstein and issued an apology to the victims: “to the women and the girls who suffered.”
This request mirrors one issued last November to Andrew Mountbatten Windsor by 16 Democrats on the same committee. Windsor lost his royal titles, including “prince,” in October amid scrutiny over his Epstein associations. He consistently denies any misconduct.
