Preparations for the United States men’s national soccer team (USMNT) World Cup campaign hit a significant snag when striker Patrick Agyemang sustained a serious injury during a match on Monday afternoon.
Injury Occurs in Derby County Clash
The 25-year-old forward, playing for Derby County against Stoke City, landed awkwardly after jumping for a header. Medical staff treated him on the field before stretchering him off in tears. Derby secured a 2-0 victory, but concerns mounted over Agyemang’s condition.
Derby County head coach John Eustace confirmed the striker headed for scans. “He’s gone off for a scan,” Eustace stated. “We’ll wait and see the results of that. Hopefully it’s not as bad as what it might be.” Fears point to a possible Achilles tendon rupture, which could derail his tournament aspirations.
Key Contender for Pochettino’s Squad
Agyemang emerged as a strong candidate for Mauricio Pochettino’s 26-man World Cup roster after recent impressive performances. He netted six goals in 14 appearances for the USMNT, including in their 5-2 defeat to Belgium.
He vies for a backup striker role alongside Ricardo Pepi and Haji Wright, with Folarin Balogun favored to start. Pochettino, who assumed control in August 2024, recently experimented with lineups, making six changes in a loss to Portugal following the Belgium match.
Selection Challenges Ahead
Pochettino faces the tough task of trimming a large pool of talent to 26 players before the USMNT’s opener against Paraguay on June 12. He noted up to 40 players remain in contention. “It is going to be painful because that process… is going to be difficult to pick only 26 from 35, 40,” Pochettino said. “Who will be there is going to be happy, who is not on the roster is going to be sad.”
The coach emphasized ongoing evaluation. “[This] was the end of our cycle… for preparation for the World Cup,” he added. “I think this is the end because the next roster is going to be the roster that is going to be involved. I think it’s too many things that we need to assess and to see in the next few weeks.”
Pochettino also indicated players understand the competition. “I think now they know that it’s going to be a competition,” he remarked. “They know that we are going to see every single week, every single game, and we are going to assess one year and a half or more, and we are going to make the decision.”
