William Hawrelak Park, the city’s premier central green space, has officially reopened its doors following a comprehensive three-year, multi-million-dollar rehabilitation project. The upgraded park now boasts a range of new features designed to enhance community engagement and enjoyment.

Revitalized Park Poised for Eventful Future

Mayor Andrew Knack expressed optimism about the park’s renewed capacity to host beloved city events. “Events are already in the planning stages,” Mayor Knack stated at the park’s grand reopening on Saturday. “We have the Freewill Shakespeare Festival commencing in the amphitheater, and numerous other popular festivals and events are eager to return and are preparing for their comeback here.”

The return of the Edmonton Heritage Festival, which was temporarily relocated for three years due to essential underground infrastructure work in Hawrelak Park, is a strong possibility. Mayor Knack also anticipates that new event organizers will be drawn to the revitalized and aesthetically enhanced space. “We’re observing so many families already out enjoying the park on a beautiful day like today. This is precisely why cities invest in infrastructure of this nature,” he remarked.

Looking ahead, Mayor Knack hopes that the extensive renovations will ensure future city councils face less daunting tasks when it comes time to address the park’s infrastructure again, decades from now.

A Glimpse into the Park’s History

Conversations about the park’s future and its naming echo sentiments from nearly five decades ago. Former city councillor Olivia Butti, who was elected in 1974 towards the end of Mayor William Hawrelak’s tenure, recalled the council’s decision in the 1980s to rename Mayfair Park in honor of Edmonton’s longest-serving mayor. “I feel very fortunate to be alive and to have experienced what I have and what I’ve accomplished,” Butti reflected. She shared an anecdote from conventions where the former Mayor Hawrelak would introduce her to fellow mayors, highlighting her youth and encouraging her to pursue a political career.

Butti also offered a message to young Edmontonians amidst ongoing discussions about Alberta’s separation: “Get involved in politics; that’s where decisions are made. Ensure you vote for individuals who align with your values and perspectives.”

Grand Reopening Celebrations

Saturday’s grand reopening was a vibrant affair, featuring family-friendly activities and opportunities to experience the park’s latest amenities. Visitors enjoyed the new lakefront restaurant, an art installation, and expanded patio areas, marking a new chapter for this cherished urban oasis.
