Windows 11 Enhances Privacy with Per-App Permissions
SHARE

Windows 11 is introducing significant enhancements to its privacy settings, allowing users to control permissions for individual desktop applications. This long-awaited feature, previously exclusive to Microsoft Store apps, now extends to all Win32 software, offering a more granular approach to managing access to sensitive data like cameras and microphones. Alongside this privacy upgrade, Microsoft is also discontinuing a controversial interface element known as the “drag tray” after receiving user feedback during testing.

Granular Privacy Controls Arrive for Desktop Apps

In a move that brings Windows 11 closer to the privacy management found on mobile operating systems, users will soon be able to dictate which applications can access their camera, microphone, and location. Previously, these permissions for traditional desktop applications (Win32 software) could only be managed through a single, overarching setting – a master switch that either enabled or disabled access for all such apps simultaneously. This meant users had to grant broad access or deny it entirely, a compromise that fell short of robust privacy standards.

The latest experimental builds of Windows 11, as noted by observers like Jakub on X, now feature the ability to revoke or grant these specific permissions on a per-app basis within the operating system’s Settings menu. This means an application could be allowed to use the microphone but denied access to the camera, for instance, providing a much finer level of control. This expansion of individual privacy controls is a critical step towards empowering users to safeguard their personal information more effectively.

Smartphone-Style Permission Prompts

Complementing the new granular settings, Windows 11 is also adopting smartphone-style permission prompts. When an application attempts to access the camera or microphone for the first time, users will be presented with a clear, immediate prompt asking for their consent. This direct approach ensures users are aware of and can actively approve or deny such access requests as they occur, rather than having to hunt through settings menus.

Microsoft Scraps Unpopular “Drag Tray” Feature

In parallel with the privacy improvements, Microsoft has officially decided to remove the “drag tray” interface element from future Windows 11 builds. This feature, which appeared at the top of the screen when a user dragged a file on the desktop, was intended to offer quick sharing options by allowing users to drop files onto various application icons for immediate sharing via services like Outlook or WhatsApp.

While the drag tray could have been a convenient tool, particularly for users with touchscreens seeking a more direct sharing method, it proved problematic for others. Testers reported that on desktops with numerous icons and folders, or when working with maximized windows, the drag tray could obstruct the intended target folder or window. This interference led to user frustration, prompting Microsoft to reconsider its implementation. In the release notes for a recent preview build, the company acknowledged the feedback and stated its intention to remove the feature while continuing to explore alternative solutions for improved file sharing and management.

Future of File Sharing in Windows 11

Microsoft has indicated that the removal of the drag tray is not necessarily the end of the concept. The company expressed its commitment to further exploring improvements in this area and hinted at the possibility of introducing a revised file-sharing experience in a future update. This suggests that while the current iteration has been shelved, the underlying goal of streamlining file sharing remains a priority.

Analysis: Long Overdue, But Welcome Changes

The introduction of per-app privacy permissions for all desktop applications in Windows 11 represents a significant and highly anticipated advancement. While the technical complexities of implementing such granular controls for Win32 applications are acknowledged, the fact that it is now being introduced suggests it was a solvable challenge all along. Critics argue that this level of privacy control should have been a foundational element of Windows 11 from its initial release, rather than a feature added retrospectively.

Similarly, the decision to remove the problematic drag tray, though a minor interface change, demonstrates Microsoft’s responsiveness to user feedback. This move, alongside the privacy enhancements, aligns with Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to refine the Windows 11 user experience and incorporate features that address long-standing user requests. Although the per-app privacy system is still in its testing phase and may undergo further modifications before its official release, these developments signal a positive direction for user control and system usability in Windows 11.

It is important to note that the drag tray feature was exclusively part of testing phases and never made it into a stable, public release of Windows 11. This highlights the iterative nature of software development, where not all previewed features ultimately make the final cut.
