Manchester United’s path to Champions League qualification boils down to straightforward math, as does Bruno Fernandes’ chase for Premier League glory. The Portuguese midfielder requires just three more assists in the final five matches to claim the league’s assist crown, currently tied at 21 by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry.
Fernandes sits at 18 assists this season after setting up Matheus Cunha’s decisive goal against Chelsea last weekend. In a campaign dominated by physical battles and set pieces, his flair positions him as a frontrunner for Player of the Year honors, capping a stellar year as club captain.
Fernandes’ Revival Under Carrick
Fernandes enjoyed solid form under Ruben Amorim but shifted to a deeper role in the 3-4-2-1 setup. Michael Carrick’s arrival restored him to an attacking midfield position, sparking remarkable output: 10 assists and three goals across 12 games.
Carrick prioritizes unleashing the 31-year-old’s attacking instincts, structuring the team to maximize his impact. He explained: “I think giving Bruno the platform to go and perform. We’re trying to create the structure and a team set-up to bring out the best of everyone. There’s limitations—everyone sacrifices for the team—but I like seeing Bruno in attacking positions with freedom.”
Carrick praised Fernandes’ team play: “He plays for the team, shoulders big responsibility, especially defensively on Saturday. Trust him—he’s a very good player, sees things, creative, sharp-minded, influential in the group. We position him to make the biggest difference.”
Proven Partnership
Fernandes has contributed a goal involvement in 10 of Carrick’s 12 matches. Their bond dates back to Fernandes’ £47 million arrival from Sporting in January 2020, when Carrick served as first-team coach.
“I’ve known Bruno a long time and worked with him when he came to the club, so it hasn’t surprised me,” Carrick said. “I knew exactly what he could bring. Over time, experience helps—he’s grown positively, with big influence and impact. He’s playing ever so well now.”
