A wanted fraudster has died after falling from a second-floor window onto the King’s Road in Chelsea, west London, in the early hours of Easter Monday. Karl Cronin, sought in connection with a multi-million-pound property scam, suffered fatal injuries on the pavement below. Authorities believe he fell from the apartment but find no evidence of third-party involvement.
History of Property Fraud in Chelsea and Fulham
Cronin targeted landlords and property owners in Chelsea and Fulham during the early 2000s, defrauding them of more than £5 million. Detectives featured him in a 2008 police appeal to locate the elusive suspect. He had evaded capture and recently resided in a rented apartment since arriving at London Heathrow in November of the previous year.

Investigators also connected Cronin to a 2017 fraud trial at Southwark Crown Court. Model Laylah de Cruz and her mother, Dianne Moorcroft, were convicted of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation. They targeted 91-year-old heiress Margaret Gwenllian Richards, who has since passed away.
De Cruz convinced Moorcroft to assume Richards’ identity via deed poll, securing a British passport and Dubai resident’s permit. They arranged the sale of Richards’ vacant £3 million Kensington home, obtaining a £1.2 million bridging loan transferred to Dubai and withdrawn in cash.
Prosecutor Teresa Hay noted during the trial that neither woman was the primary architect or beneficiary, stating there would be significant interest in Cronin if he returned to the UK. De Cruz received a five-year sentence, while Moorcroft was imprisoned for the same term.
Friends and Neighbors React
A close acquaintance described Cronin as ruthless: “He did a lot of bad things in his life and destroyed many lives. He lived through lies and deceit. All he cared about was money, dating young women, and having a good time. It did not matter who got hurt.” The friend added that many feel he met a deserved end.
Another associate portrayed him differently: “He was a loveable rogue, like an Arthur Daley figure. Always good company, the life and soul of a party, living life to the full. But he caused a lot of damage, no doubt.”
A neighbor expressed curiosity amid rumors: “I’ve heard so many other things—we are all interested to know.” One associate insisted: “There is no way Karl killed himself. None of the people who knew him believe that. One thing is for sure—he had a lot of enemies.”
Ongoing Police Investigation
Authorities continue to probe the circumstances of Cronin’s death, with no further details released on how he returned to London undetected.
