Renowned rock singer Alex Ligertwood, celebrated for his powerful vocals with the pioneering band Santana, has died at the age of 79.
His family confirmed the news, with daughter Merci sharing the announcement shortly after his final stage performance weeks earlier. Ligertwood passed away peacefully in his sleep at his Santa Monica home, accompanied by his dog Bobo.
Family’s Heartfelt Statements
Ligertwood’s wife, Shawn Brogan, released a moving tribute, stating, “Alex was loved by so many.” She shared cherished photos of the musician and added, “If you knew him, you loved him. He touched so many with his extraordinary voice. He was all heart and soul.”
Brogan highlighted her husband’s passion, noting his “favourite thing in life was to make music, sing and to share his gift.” Reflecting on his recent last show, she said, “I’m grateful for that. He did it his way, on his terms, till the end.” She concluded, “I will always love you, my sweet Alex,” and requested prayers for herself and her children.

Friends and colleagues have shared an outpouring of tributes. Guitarist Brandon Paul, who toured with Ligertwood in Icons of Classic Rock, described him as a “world-class professional.” Paul praised, “His voice was a force of nature – soulful, from the heart, and legendary every single night. Beyond the music, he was an amazing human being and a dear friend.”
He added, “Having a vocalist who worked with icons like Carlos Santana and Jeff Beck compliment my guitar playing is something I will carry with me forever.” Fans have lauded the pioneering impact of the band Ligertwood helped define.

Ligertwood served as Santana’s lead vocalist across five periods from 1979 to 1994. He lent his voice to iconic albums including Marathon, Zebop!, Shango, and Sacred Fire: Live in South America.
