Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer maintains a solid lead over Wes Streeting in a hypothetical Labour leadership contest among party members, but he trails behind Andy Burnham and other rivals, according to recent polling data.

Key Matchup Results

In a head-to-head scenario, 53 percent of Labour members support Sir Keir Starmer compared to just 23 percent for the former health secretary, Wes Streeting. However, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham dominates with 61 percent support against the Prime Minister.

Sir Keir also faces defeats from Angela Rayner and Ed Miliband in direct contests. He holds advantages over other figures including Al Carns, Darren Jones, Bridget Phillipson, Louise Haigh, Yvette Cooper, Shabana Mahmood, and Lucy Powell.

Member Views on Leadership Change

Despite Sir Keir’s vow to contest any challenge and his automatic inclusion on the ballot, 57 percent of members favor a leadership change. Additionally, 84 percent demand a clear timetable for a contest.

Most members (43 percent) prefer the Prime Minister to delay his departure until the autumn conference season, rather than resign immediately (12 percent). This timing aligns with recent developments, such as Andy Burnham’s request to Labour’s ruling body for permission to stand in the vacant Makerfield seat.

Expert Insights

Damian Lyons Lowe, CEO of Survation, notes that Sir Keir and Mr. Streeting were neck-and-neck in November last year, but membership support for the Prime Minister has since increased. He attributes Mr. Streeting’s dip to his openly expressed ambition for the top role.

Emma Burnell, editor of LabourList, describes the results as challenging for Wes Streeting. “The membership may not be happy with Keir Starmer, but when faced with a challenge from Wes they do not currently believe that is the change that is needed,” she states. “Wes is a great communicator, and were a contest to come down to just him and Keir Starmer, it could be that he can persuade enough people to change their minds. But as it stands he will be facing a Herculean task to do so.”

Catherine West’s Perspective

Labour MP Catherine West, who sparked recent discussions by initially threatening a leadership bid before withdrawing, believes Sir Keir could prevail. Speaking on BBC Radio 4, she said: “If Keir Starmer decides he has got the bottle and he can come and fight – fight as if he is fighting for the working people of this country – then he could beat the others, because he is a very bright man.”

Ms. West represents Hornsey and Friern Barnet and had called for a departure timetable, briefly rallying support before stepping back from a challenge.

The Survation poll surveyed 1,124 LabourList readers identifying as party members over the past two days.
