A prominent UK brewery has announced a significant reduction in the alcohol by volume (ABV) for four of its most popular beverages. The changes affect Ghost Ship Pale Ale, Southwold Bitter, Wild Wave English Cider, and Broadside.
Specific Product Adjustments
Ghost Ship Pale Ale will now have an ABV of 4.1%, down from its previous 4.5%. Wild Wave English Cider has seen its alcohol content lowered from 5% to 4.5%. Broadside, sold in 500ml bottles, now sits at 6% ABV, a decrease from 6.3%.
Southwold Bitter has also undergone adjustments, with both its bottle/can and keg/cask versions dropping to 3.4% ABV. Previously, these were 4.1% for bottle and can, and 3.7% for keg and cask.
Brewery’s Rationale for Changes
The brewery expressed confidence that the flavor profiles of its beers will remain unaffected by these ABV reductions. A spokesperson stated, “We are confident that the flavour of our beers will remain uncompromised, thanks to the expertise of our brewing team.”
The company highlighted that these modifications align with evolving consumer preferences and present a strategic opportunity to enhance brand value and reinvest in future growth.
Industry Challenges
These adjustments come amidst a challenging period for the wider brewing industry. Reports indicate that one brewery has entered administration, while another has ceased operations entirely.
Administration and Liquidation
Tottenham-based Redemption Brewing Company has appointed administrators from FRP Advisory, who are now overseeing the business. This family-run brewery, with a century of operation, is seeking a potential buyer. Operations are continuing while the administration process unfolds.
Separately, Glasgow-based Overtone Brewing Ltd has been wound up by the courts and entered liquidation. The brewery, known for its distinctive craft beer cans and experimental IPAs, accumulated unsustainable debts. George Lafferty of restructuring firm BTG Begbies Traynor is handling the liquidation.
