Iconic Footwear Brand Makes High Street Comeback
The well-known British footwear and handbag retailer, Russell & Bromley, is making a notable return to high streets just weeks after a significant number of its stores ceased operations. The brand was acquired by retail giant Next in a pre-pack administration deal earlier this year, a move designed to preserve its legacy.
Rescue Deal Details
Next purchased the luxury brand for £2.5 million, a transaction that also included the acquisition of all intellectual property rights and the existing stock valued at £1.3 million. However, the integration process under Next’s ownership led to a selective approach regarding the brand’s physical presence. Consequently, 33 stores and nine retail concessions were permanently closed.
This restructuring resulted in job losses, with staff holding redundancy claims currently being managed by financial firm Interpath, which is also overseeing the remaining business operations. Despite these closures, three high-profile locations were retained: Chelsea, Mayfair, and the Bluewater shopping centre.
Community Excitement and Future Outlook
Now, approximately one month after the final store closure, Russell & Bromley has reopened its doors in Richmond, South-west London. The return has been met with enthusiasm from shoppers, who have taken to social media platforms to their delight. Comments such as “Excellent. Good news” and “Good news for Richmond” reflect the positive reception.
Founded in 1879 by George Bromley and Elizabeth Russell, the company is currently led by Andrew Bromley. Reflecting on the sale, he stated, “Following a strategic review with external advisers, we have taken the difficult decision to sell the Russell & Bromley brand. This is the best route to secure the future for the brand, and we would like to thank our staff, suppliers, partners and customers for their support throughout our history.”
Next has affirmed its commitment to supporting Russell & Bromley’s future, stating, “This acquisition secures the future of a much-loved British footwear brand. Next intends to build on this legacy and provide the operational stability and expertise to support Russell & Bromley’s next chapter, allowing it to return to its core mission: the design and curation of world-class, premium footwear and accessories for many years to come.”
