Political Figure Criticizes Presidential Attendance at NBA Finals Amidst Fan Event Disruptions

A prominent political figure has voiced strong disapproval regarding the upcoming visit of Donald Trump to the NBA Finals, asserting that his presence will diminish the enjoyment for thousands of fans. This marks a historic occasion, as Trump is slated to be the first sitting president to attend an NBA Finals game when he arrives in Manhattan for Game 3 on Monday. The New York Knicks, currently leading the series 2-0, are set to face the San Antonio Spurs.

Despite an invitation from Knicks owner James Dolan and Trump’s self-proclaimed status as a “big fan” of the team, his attendance has not been universally welcomed. Initial reactions from some Knicks supporters expressed anger, urging the President to reconsider his plans. This sentiment stems from the announcement that outdoor watch parties outside Madison Square Garden (MSG) will be prohibited on the day of the game due to heightened security measures required for the presidential visit.

Congresswoman Joins Outrage Over Fan Event Ban

Following the initial outcry, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has added her voice to the criticism. She suggested that Trump’s attendance should be forgone to permit the continuation of the fan watch parties. Responding to a question on her Instagram story about whether Trump’s presence would be a “vibe killer,” Ocasio-Cortez stated, “It already has been! Now the city has to shut down all the watch parties outside of the arena, that have been the source of so much fun.”

The Congresswoman elaborated on her perspective, drawing from her own experiences as a politician attending sporting events. She explained, “As a politician, I have gone to my fair amount of sports games – but there are just some things that you don’t want to go [to], either to jinx it or just in general. Sometimes the accommodations that are required – [such as] the security for you to show up – are just not worth shutting down the fun for other people. Sometimes you decide not to go to things so that other people can enjoy it.”

Thousands of fans had previously gathered for outdoor watch parties during Games 1 and 2, but these gatherings are confirmed to be off the table for Monday’s game, a decision attributed in part to Trump’s attendance.

Conflicting Statements Emerge Regarding Watch Party Cancellations

Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks surfaced shortly after apparent disagreements surfaced between law enforcement and MSG officials concerning the cancellation of the watch parties. Initial reports indicated the parties would be canceled, but an NYPD spokesperson later informed another outlet that outdoor watch parties could proceed. However, this update was quickly contradicted by a subsequent NYPD statement that rescinded the earlier position.

In an official statement, authorities confirmed, “There will be no watch party outside MSG. This decision was made in coordination with the Secret Service. There will be watch parties at other locations. We are currently determining where they will be. We’ll get back to you when we have more to share.”

Adding another layer to the situation, a statement from Madison Square Garden asserted that Trump’s attendance was not the reason for the watch party cancellations. Their statement, as reported by another news source, read: “The permit for the Plaza33 Game 3 watch party was denied by the City’s permitting office in consultation with the NYPD. However, the White House will confirm that this is not about the President. We understand NYPD Commissioner Tisch is planning additional street closures around Madison Square Garden.”

Following MSG’s counter-claim, the NYPD reiterated its stance, attributing the new plans directly to Trump’s visit. Their statement clarified: “There will be no watch parties outside of Madison Square Garden for Game 3 only. This was done fully in coordination with the Secret Service because of the presidential visit. We expect watch parties at Madison Square Garden to resume for Game 4.”

Extensive Security Measures Planned for Game 3

The Knicks are aiming to secure their first NBA championship since 1973. Hundreds of US Secret Service officers and agents are expected to be on duty at the Garden on Monday, supplemented by thousands of NYPD personnel. A significant perimeter lockdown is anticipated around Madison Square Garden, affecting major thoroughfares in Midtown Manhattan. The Seventh and Eighth Avenue corridors adjacent to the arena are slated for closure, impacting traffic and pedestrian movement in a highly congested area.

Access will be severely restricted, with only ticketed attendees permitted near the venue. Security screening will be considerably more stringent than for a typical event, resembling airport-level checks. Notably, no bags, including purses and backpacks of any size, will be allowed inside the arena. Attendees are strongly advised to leave all personal belongings at home to avoid being denied entry.

Security checkpoints are scheduled to open at 6:30 PM, two hours prior to the game’s scheduled 8:30 PM tip-off. Officials are encouraging fans to arrive early to mitigate potential delays and long queues.
