Stars Illuminate Tony Awards Red Carpet Amid Pregnancy Announcement
New York City’s Radio City Music Hall became a beacon of celebrity on Sunday evening as actors Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott made their highly anticipated red carpet debut as a couple at the 79th Annual Tony Awards. The pair, who recently revealed Plaza’s pregnancy, presented a united and affectionate front.
A Glowing Appearance and a Nod to Broadway
Plaza, 41, known for her roles in ‘Parks and Recreation’ and ‘The White Lotus,’ showcased her pregnancy glow in a striking black spaghetti-strap dress adorned with bold pinstripes. The floor-length gown featured contrasting white triangular accents that met at the slim straps. She complemented her attire with open-toe shoes and minimal accessories, allowing her natural beauty and the developing baby bump to take center stage. Abbott, 40, a celebrated actor in his own right, matched Plaza’s style with a sophisticated black velvet tuxedo. His trousers were tailored to a slightly cropped length, revealing stylish black boots. A slim black necktie and a tasteful white pocket square completed his ensemble.
A Relationship Forged in Art and Now Growing
The couple’s appearance comes after public surprise in April regarding reports of Plaza’s first pregnancy with Abbott. The child, whose gender remains undisclosed, is expected to arrive in the fall. While their relationship status was not widely known previously, Plaza and Abbott have a shared history that extends beyond their recent public appearances. They first collaborated in 2019 on the indie psychological drama ‘Black Bear,’ where both actors took on dual roles as actors and directors. The film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020, garnered critical acclaim, with many highlighting Plaza’s performance.
Their professional synergy continued as they reunited on stage in 2023 for the Off-Broadway revival of John Patrick Shanley’s play ‘Danny And The Deep Blue Sea,’ a production that concluded its run in January 2024. This theatrical connection is particularly poignant as Abbott is nominated for best featured actor in a play for his portrayal of Biff Loman, son of Willy Loman, in Arthur Miller’s ‘Death Of A Salesman.’
A Star-Studded Night at the Tony Awards
The Tony Awards ceremony itself was a star-studded affair, celebrating the best of Broadway. This year’s nominations featured a wealth of talent, including Daniel Radcliffe, Rose Byrne, Nathan Lane, Laurie Metcalf, Stephanie Hsu, Carrie Coon, Lesley Manville, John Lithgow, Luke Evans, Rachel Dratch, and June Squibb.
Pop superstar P!nk took on hosting duties for the first time, expressing her deep honor and admiration for the Broadway community. While she has not performed on Broadway, her music has been featured in popular musicals. The night’s most nominated shows included ‘Schmigadoon!’ and ‘The Lost Boys,’ each securing 12 nominations.
The competition for awards was fierce across various categories. Notable nominees included Daniel Radcliffe for best leading actor in a play, Rose Byrne for best leading actress in a play, and Laurie Metcalf and Nathan Lane for their roles in ‘Death of a Salesman.’ In the best featured actor in a play category, Christopher Abbott faced strong competition from fellow nominees such as Alden Ehrenreich and Danny Burstein.
The evening also celebrated musical theater with nominations for ‘The Rocky Horror Show,’ ‘Ragtime,’ and ‘Chess,’ among others. Stephanie Hsu, an Oscar nominee for ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once,’ was recognized for her performance in ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ in the best leading actress in a musical category. The ceremony honored the dedication and talent that define the Great White Way.
