French Authorities Confirm Horrific Details in Young Girl’s Death
Authorities have confirmed that an 11-year-old schoolgirl, Lyhanna, was raped before she was murdered in a case that has deeply disturbed France. An autopsy revealed the biological profile of 41-year-old Jérôme Barella in intimate areas of the victim, according to initial reports.
This grim development has understandably left Lyhanna’s family experiencing profound disgust and anger. Their legal representative issued a statement conveying the family’s devastation and their request for privacy during this incredibly difficult time.
Timeline of Events and Investigation
Lyhanna was discovered on June 4 in a disused grain silo on abandoned farmland in Fleurance, six days after she was reported missing. A large-scale search effort involving approximately 170 officers and numerous volunteers, some on horseback, scoured the surrounding countryside. Her body was eventually found on an isolated farm, less than 10 miles from where she was last seen.
Jérôme Barella, identified as the father of a friend of Lyhanna and the last person seen with her, has been charged with kidnapping and false imprisonment. He is currently being held in solitary confinement at Mont-de-Marsan prison in anticipation of his trial.
Pattern of Allegations Against Suspect
Investigations have since brought to light multiple prior accusations of sexual abuse against Barella involving minors. Public prosecutors indicated that two complaints for rape were filed against him in 2022 and, reportedly, in 2025. The 2022 case was ultimately dismissed.
In August of the previous year, the mother of a 10-year-old girl named Rosa filed a report alleging that Barella had sexually abused her daughter on several occasions. Medical evidence reportedly corroborated the child’s account of abuse. Despite this complaint, Barella was not questioned by investigators in the nine months that followed. Additionally, two other cases involving accusations of molesting young girls were closed due to insufficient evidence.
Public and Official Reactions
The handling of these prior allegations has led to public outcry, with some suggesting that if Barella had been contacted by authorities, he might have been deterred, potentially preventing Lyhanna’s tragic death.
Under significant pressure, French President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged a systemic failure, stating, “It is clear there was a malfunction. Things did not happen as they should have. That is obvious, and it is unacceptable. We cannot look her family in the face and tell them everything went well. That is false.”
Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin expressed his shock at the case and questioned the lack of decisive action in investigating Barella.
Family History of Accusations
Further compounding the distress, it has emerged that both Barella’s father and brother have also faced accusations of rape. Jérôme Barella’s brother, Yannick, was arrested on charges including “rape of a minor over 15 years old,” “rape by spouse,” “sequestration,” and “repeated death threats by spouse.” The father, whose first name also begins with J, was reportedly accused of rape by his partner’s granddaughters. The initial complaint in 2018, filed by a 12-year-old girl, was dismissed by police. A subsequent complaint involved a minor between the ages of 10 and 13 who also alleged rape, according to reports RTL and Le Parisien.
These allegations against Barella’s father were re-examined as part of a broader review of sexual abuse cases involving minors, initiated at the request of Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin.
The property where Lyhanna’s body was discovered is believed to be a location where Barella had previously worked.
