Cowboys End Broncos’ Finals Bid in Fierce Derby Clash
SHARE

The Brisbane Broncos’ NRL premiership defence has officially ended, with their finals aspirations dashed following an 18-10 derby defeat to the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville. This loss marks a significant downturn for the Broncos, positioning them to become the first defending premiers since the 2005 Wests Tigers to miss the finals the following season. Their campaign, plagued by inconsistency, was definitively ended in front of a sell-out crowd on Saturday night by a determined Cowboys side, spearheaded by the formidable leadership of Jason Taumalolo.

Broncos’ Season Concludes Amidst Disappointment

With only six games remaining in the regular season, Brisbane sits on 18 competition points, a deficit of four wins from the top eight. Even a perfect record in their remaining fixtures would see them finish with a maximum of 12 victories, a tally insufficient to qualify for the finals. Compounding their on-field struggles, the Broncos’ for-and-against record stands at a dismal -132, a margin too substantial to overcome even with favourable results from other teams.

Coach Michael Maguire faces mounting pressure following his inability to translate a roster of high-calibre players into consistent wins. “I’m pretty shattered for my players and staff… but it just hasn’t been our time,” Maguire commented. “We have six games to go, and we will focus on the next one.”

Cowboys Strengthen Finals Hopes with Derby Victory

The victory significantly bolsters the North Queensland Cowboys’ own pursuit of a finals berth. Currently occupying eighth place with 26 points, the Cowboys showcased superior performance in critical positions. Jason Taumalolo delivered a dominant display in the forwards, outplaying his Broncos counterpart Payne Haas. Halfback Jake Clifford, recalled to the starting lineup after being omitted the previous week, made an immediate impact with a commanding kicking game that consistently troubled Brisbane.

Cowboys centre Tom Chester was a standout performer, while fullback Scott Drinkwater exhibited a level of composure that contrasted sharply with the Broncos’ Reece Walsh. North Queensland coach Todd Payten had ignited pre-match tension by stating “everyone hates the Broncos,” a sentiment his players appeared eager to validate on the field. “I’m very happy for the team, the town and the club,” Payten said after the match. “It was a good performance by our lads. We started fast and physical.”

Key Moments and Match Turning Points

The Cowboys demonstrated resilience, overcoming the early loss of hooker Reed Mahoney to concussion in the seventh minute. A powerful run from Taumalolo through the middle set up the opening try, with Jaxon Purdue’s precise grubber kick finding Heilum Luki, who dotted down. Brisbane responded when five-eighth Ezra Mam’s well-placed grubber allowed Xavier Willison to score in the corner.

However, the Cowboys regained the ascendancy just before halftime. A sweeping cutout pass from Drinkwater found winger Braidon Burns, who evaded Walsh before offloading to Clifford for North Queensland to establish a 14-4 lead. Although the Cowboys extended their advantage to 12 points, Brisbane mounted a comeback. Walsh’s towering bomb forced an error from Burns, leading to a try for Mam after he received a pass from Walsh. Mam nearly scored again, but a subsequent penalty conceded by Brisbane winger Josiah Karapani allowed the Cowboys to re-establish an eight-point lead.

The experience of veteran Broncos players Adam Reynolds and Ben Hunt was notably absent in crucial moments. The Carl Webb Medal, awarded to the man of the match in honour of the late rugby league legend who passed away in 2023, was presented to Cowboys co-captain Reuben Cotter. The intense derby encounter saw several players placed on report, including North Queensland’s Griffin Neame, Jaxon Purdue, and Heilum Luki, as well as Brisbane’s Preston Riki and Kotoni Staggs.

Looking Ahead

For the Broncos, the focus now shifts to salvaging pride in the remaining games of a disappointing season. The Cowboys, meanwhile, will look to build on this significant victory as they push towards a top-eight finish and a place in the NRL finals.
