Virginia Mom Dies of Salmonella After Kenya Mission Trip

A mother of four from Richmond, Virginia, has died after contracting a severe case of salmonella during a mission trip to Kenya aimed at assisting orphaned children. Ayla Garcia, 36, traveled to Nairobi on June 30 with her mother, sister, and aunt and uncle to support Zion Family, a local home for orphaned youth. The trip, organized by Richmond’s Overflow Christian Church, was intended to provide aid and support to the children.

Tragic Turn on a Humanitarian Mission

During her time in Kenya, Garcia shared moments of her journey, including visits to local sites, interactions with residents, and encounters with wildlife. However, the mission took a critical turn around July 10 when Garcia fell ill, likely due to consuming contaminated ice. Initially attempting to recover at her hotel, her condition worsened, prompting her admission to a local hospital on July 11 at the urging of a local resident.

Garcia spent nearly two weeks hospitalized as the salmonella infection escalated, becoming life-threatening. Complicating her illness was a pre-existing diagnosis of sickle cell disease. Her family stated that this condition made the infection far more dangerous, allowing it to spread rapidly into her bloodstream and severely impact her kidneys, liver, and overall blood health. She required multiple blood transfusions due to critically low hemoglobin levels, underwent dialysis, and battled jaundice.

Challenges of Medical Evacuation

With their return flights scheduled for July 15 and Garcia’s mother needing to return home for essential medication, Garcia’s mother and sister, Tabitha, made the difficult decision to travel back to Virginia. Garcia’s aunt and uncle remained in Kenya to stay by her side. At this stage, doctors at Aga Khan University Hospital had not cleared Garcia for commercial travel. The family was informed that an emergency medical evacuation would cost upwards of $250,000.

In response to the financial burden, Tabitha initiated an online fundraiser to gather donations for her sister’s repatriation. Meanwhile, Garcia herself posted a video from her hospital bed on July 19, attempting to explain her situation while visibly struggling to breathe. She expressed her determination to return home to her children.

A Glimmer of Hope and Sudden Loss

Days following her video update, Garcia’s family shared positive news on the online fundraiser, indicating that she was showing signs of recovery, breathing on her own, and making progress, though still awaiting medical clearance for discharge. However, this period of improvement was tragically short-lived. Around 11 p.m. on Thursday, the family received notification of Garcia’s passing.

In a subsequent update on the fundraising page, her family shared the heartbreaking news: “It is with a heavy heart that we share our beloved daughter, sister, mother, aunt, cousin, niece [and] friend Ayla has passed.” They acknowledged her “hard fought” battle with sickle cell disease and reiterated their need for donations to facilitate the return of her remains to the United States.

Remembering Ayla Garcia

The online fundraiser, which had garnered over $32,700 by early Monday, also noted Garcia’s wish to be cremated in Kenya. Her family is proceeding with these arrangements and working on a memorial service to honor her life. Friends and family remember Garcia as a kind, faithful, and humorous individual. Her mother, Patricia, described her as “happy-go-lucky” and someone who genuinely enjoyed helping others.

Zion Njeri, a close friend, shared a touching tribute, referring to Garcia as more than a friend, but a sister and a significant blessing. Njeri highlighted Garcia’s unwavering support, both musically and emotionally, and her consistent encouragement. She recalled Garcia’s habit of ending conversations with “I love you” and praised her incredible strength and faith in the face of pain. Njeri found comfort in the belief that Garcia is now at peace, having gained a “beautiful angel” in heaven.

A Devastating Loss for Her Children

Ayla Garcia is survived by her four children: 16-year-old Kelly, 15-year-old Kyle, seven-year-old Patrick III, and four-year-old Priya. Her sister, Tabitha, spoke of the profound difficulty in witnessing the children grapple with their mother’s absence, constantly asking why she isn’t there. Garcia’s ultimate goal, Tabitha emphasized, was to return home to her family.

The circumstances surrounding Garcia’s death underscore the risks associated with travel to regions where water and food safety standards may differ, particularly for individuals with underlying health conditions. Her story serves as a somber reminder of the dedication of those who travel to provide aid and the potential dangers they can face.
