Canal+ has reported its latest half-year financial results, revealing modest overall revenue growth alongside a significant increase in profitability. This performance was bolstered by early cost savings derived from its full acquisition of African pay-TV operator MultiChoice and a slowdown in the decline of MultiChoice’s sales. The French media group is navigating a strategy that balances aggressive cost-cutting with necessary investments aimed at revitalizing the recently integrated MultiChoice business.
Financial Performance Overview
For the six months concluding in June, Canal+ announced a consolidated revenue increase of 0.6%, reaching €4.29 billion. More impressively, adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, and exceptional items (EBIT) surged by 19.1% to €433 million. This profit uplift was significantly influenced by the initial integration of MultiChoice, which contributed €122 million in realized synergies by the end of June. These savings included the closure of the Showmax streaming service, a key step in streamlining operations.
Management has reiterated its full-year financial targets, projecting flat revenue and adjusted EBIT of €735 million. The company’s strategy involves a delicate act: achieving these profitability goals while simultaneously investing in growth initiatives, particularly within the MultiChoice segment.
Performance Outside and Within MultiChoice
Excluding the MultiChoice operations, Canal+ experienced revenue growth of 1.8%. This segment was primarily supported by StudioCanal, the group’s film and television production arm. However, the European operations saw a dip, attributed to strategic exits from a French free-to-air channel and a Hungarian satellite TV business, indicating a focus on core markets and profitable ventures.
Within the MultiChoice segment, revenue continued to decline, albeit at a slower pace. Sales fell by 2.9% to €1.19 billion, an improvement compared to the 6.2% drop recorded in the first quarter. Canal+ attributes this stabilization to a turnaround strategy that requires upfront investment. Key tactics include offering equipment subsidies to new customers, expanding the retail store footprint, and introducing more affordable and simplified subscription bundles designed to attract a broader household base.
Strategic Challenges and Investor Outlook
The central challenge for Canal+ lies in its ability to narrow the revenue decline at MultiChoice without compromising its overall profit targets. The company’s full-year EBIT guidance of €735 million suggests that earnings in the second half of the year are expected to be lower than in the first half, despite the strong initial performance.
