Gaza Beekeeper Rebuilds Life’s Work Amidst War’s Devastation

In the heart of Gaza City’s Tel al-Hawa neighborhood, amidst the stark realities of war-torn urban landscapes, Ibrahim Naji al-Dabba tends to a fragile symbol of resilience. Perched atop a damaged residential tower, surrounded by the debris of conflict, rows of beehives represent not just a livelihood, but a tenacious refusal to let his life’s work be extinguished. For the 49-year-old father of seven, this rooftop, far from an ideal apiary, has become the sole sanctuary for a profession that has sustained his family for generations.

From Abundance to Near Annihilation: The Impact of Conflict on Gaza’s Beekeeping

Prior to the recent escalation of hostilities, al-Dabba was a prominent figure in Gaza’s beekeeping community, overseeing more than 400 beehives scattered across the eastern regions. His operation was comprehensive, encompassing apiaries, processing equipment, storage facilities, and a vehicle essential for managing his thriving business. This enterprise was the bedrock of his family’s financial security. However, the pervasive destruction wrought by the war has left him with a fraction of his former capacity. “Beekeeping is not merely a business,” al-Dabba states, emphasizing its profound significance. “It is our family’s sole source of income, our existence, our sustenance, and our future.”

Al-Dabba, who also holds the position of president within the Gaza Beekeepers’ cooperative society, cultivated a deep-seated passion for beekeeping long before it became his primary profession. His expertise extended to honey production, the critical breeding of queen bees, and the development of bee strains specifically adapted to Gaza’s unique climatic conditions. Even under the strain of years of blockade, Gaza’s beekeeping sector had demonstrated remarkable growth, with numerous beekeepers contributing to both honey production and local agriculture through essential pollination services. The onset of the current conflict abruptly halted this progress.

The relentless bombardment and widespread displacement made accessing his apiaries impossible, leading to the devastating loss of his extensive operation. Al-Dabba recounts losing his home, over 400 beehives, specialized honey-processing machinery, storage infrastructure, and nearly all the tools vital to his trade. He estimates his financial losses to be staggering, exceeding $350,000. “The most crushing moment was confronting the reality that everything I had dedicated years to building had vanished,” he reflects. “The loss extended beyond my beehives to my home, my equipment, and my only means of livelihood.”

A Determined Rebirth: Rebuilding from Three Hives

Like countless other Palestinian families in Gaza, al-Dabba and his family endured repeated displacements throughout the conflict, moving between various locations in search of safety. When periods of relative calm emerged, he sought alternative employment but found none available. This led him back to the only profession he truly knew and trusted. Drawing upon his remaining savings and an unwavering determination, he managed to acquire just three beehives, an investment costing over $3,000 – a significant sum given the dire economic circumstances in Gaza.

The inherent dangers of inter-area travel and the immense difficulty of transporting hives necessitated a novel approach. He established his new, albeit small, apiary on the rooftop of a severely damaged residential building. He was acutely aware of the risks involved. The building itself bore the marks of conflict, and the wooden hive boxes were vulnerable to theft by individuals seeking firewood or construction materials. Nevertheless, he believed the elevated location offered the best possible protection for his meager remaining assets. “I wanted the bees to acclimatize to these brutal conditions, much like we have been forced to adapt,” he explains.

Working alongside his sons, al-Dabba painstakingly nurtured these three colonies, gradually expanding them to a total of 35 beehives. While honey production remains modest, each successful harvest signifies a victory far more profound than mere financial gain. “I don’t feel as though I am solely caring for bees,” al-Dabba shares. “I am striving to preserve a fragment of the life that the war has stolen from me.”

Enduring Challenges and the Vital Role of Beekeeping

The daily struggle persists. Access to essential beekeeping supplies, including medications, wax foundation, supplementary feed, and specialized equipment, has become either severely limited or prohibitively expensive. For many beekeepers, the financial burden of re-establishing an apiary is insurmountable, and the escalating cost of packaging materials presents a significant hurdle to selling their honey.

Despite these formidable obstacles, al-Dabba remains convinced of the indispensable role of beekeeping. He emphasizes its importance not only for honey production but also for the very foundation of Gaza’s agriculture. “Sustainable agriculture is simply not possible without bees,” he asserts. “Supporting beekeepers is synonymous with supporting food production and ensuring the livelihoods of thousands of families.”

Bees as a Metaphor for Resilience

Standing among his hives on the war-scarred rooftop, al-Dabba draws a poignant parallel between his bees and the people of Gaza. “The bees are akin to the people here,” he observes. “They persevere and continue their work despite immense hardship. They invariably find their way back to the hive.” For him, each surviving colony carries a powerful message that transcends the simple act of honey production. “As long as even a single beehive remains, and a single beekeeper holds fast to this profession, there exists the hope that life can indeed begin anew.”
