A mother and her boyfriend have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a two-year-old girl who suffered weeks of horrific abuse, including 21 broken bones, before her death. Alexandra Walker, 26, and Harrison Simpson, 22, were convicted of murder and child cruelty following a trial at Teesside Crown Court. Simpson was also found guilty of sexually assaulting the child, Isabelle Welsh.

Tragic End to Weeks of Abuse

Isabelle Welsh, aged two, collapsed at her home in Thornaby, Teesside, in September. The court heard evidence that she had endured significant abuse over several weeks leading up to her death. The extent of the injuries included 21 broken bones, indicating a prolonged period of mistreatment.

Delayed Response and Disturbing Searches

During the trial, it emerged that Alexandra Walker did not immediately seek medical help for her severely injured daughter. Instead, she reportedly conducted internet searches, including the phrase ‘why would my toddler be bleeding’. This occurred while her child was in a critical condition.

Even when Isabelle collapsed and was clearly dying, Walker allegedly delayed calling emergency services. CCTV footage from the home reportedly showed her smoking a cigarette in the kitchen during this critical period. It was only when her stepfather arrived at the property and expressed concern for Isabelle’s well-being that emergency services were contacted.

Paramedics arriving at the scene found Isabelle covered in bruises, with blood present in her nappy. The child was transported to the hospital, where she tragically died the following day. Walker and Simpson were subsequently arrested.

Judicial Sentencing and Remarks

Ms Justice Norton sentenced Simpson to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 28 years and six months, while Walker received a life sentence with a minimum term of 22 years. The judge characterized the pair as an ‘evil’ couple who inflicted the fatal injuries and then failed to provide necessary medical assistance, despite the obvious need for it.

The judge noted that Walker had a history of dishonesty, describing her as someone who ‘lied from start to finish’. This included fabricating details about her education, falsely claiming to have breast cancer, and denying drug use and sales. Walker also reportedly misrepresented her alcohol consumption, with evidence suggesting she drank 10 cans of beer on the night of her daughter’s death.

Further characterizations by the judge included describing Walker as a ‘fantasist and an attention-seeker’ who engaged in self-harm and then falsely claimed to have been attacked. The judge stated, ‘I have no doubt whatsoever that your lack of urgency or concern for your child was because you wrongly believed that Isabelle was already dead, and you were working out what to do to save your own skin.’

Fatal Injuries and Sexual Assault

The court was informed that Isabelle sustained an unsurvivable head injury within the 24 hours preceding her death. The judge also indicated that the child was sexually assaulted around the time the fatal injury was inflicted.

The convictions and sentencing bring a close to a deeply disturbing case involving the death of a young child who suffered extensive abuse before her untimely demise.
