Iran Names New Targets as US Weighs Weekend Strikes

The world is on edge as Iran has reportedly named its own potential targets in response to reports that U.S. President Donald Trump is considering a new wave of strikes against Tehran over the weekend. Tensions have escalated significantly, with both nations reportedly preparing for further military action.

Escalating Tensions and Retaliatory Threats

According to a state-affiliated news agency, Iran has vowed to target energy infrastructure if the United States and Israel launch any strikes over the coming weekend. A senior security official, speaking to Tasnim News Agency, stated that Iran has prepared “extensive response plans” to counter what he described as the “madness” of potential U.S. and Israeli actions. This official asserted that Iran possesses “the capacity and the will” to execute these plans.

Meanwhile, multiple reports indicated that President Trump was deliberating on potential attacks against Iran’s energy infrastructure. The White House on Friday suggested that the President was indeed considering new strikes, as the U.S. continues to press Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and adhere to the terms of a truce agreement that recently collapsed after being forged last month.

President Trump’s Stance and White House Statements

During a televised meeting with his Cabinet at Camp David, President Trump expressed a firm resolve. “We will be hitting them very hard and you know at some point, they’re going to say, ‘We just can’t take it anymore,'” he stated.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated the administration’s frustration, alleging that Iran had signed a memorandum of understanding with the U.S. regarding a truce last month but subsequently violated it by firing upon commercial ships and causing the deaths of American soldiers. “President Trump is not going to stand by and allow this terrorist behavior to occur,” Leavitt said in a statement. “Iran will continue to pay until they come to the table in, what President Trump deems, a meaningful way.”

Leavitt’s warning followed President Trump’s earlier remarks to reporters on Friday, where he stated, “we just want to win” in Iran and indicated that U.S. military action was expected to continue for some time.

Conflicting Reports on Strike Approvals

Reports regarding the approval of strikes have varied. The Wall Street Journal, citing several officials, claimed that President Trump had already authorized strikes that could commence this weekend and potentially last for several days. Conversely, Axios reported that Trump “hasn’t given final orders to do it.” Many observers anticipate that any significant military operation would aim to conclude before Wall Street opens on Monday to mitigate potential economic repercussions.

Recent Incidents and Iranian Actions

The situation has been further complicated by recent incidents. Iran reportedly fired drones at Kuwait, a Gulf nation hosting U.S. forces, and claimed to have targeted oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil and gas shipments that has seen significant disruption due to the ongoing conflict. Kuwait’s Defense Ministry confirmed on Friday that its armed forces had intercepted drones within its airspace, stating that the Iranian attacks had targeted several vital military facilities, resulting in material damage from falling shrapnel but no reported casualties.

Iranian state media asserted that Iran had targeted an air base in Kuwait with drones in retaliation for U.S. strikes conducted on Thursday. Furthermore, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed to have intercepted two oil tankers attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz, with four other tankers reportedly turning back. Details regarding the ownership of these tankers or any potential casualties were not immediately available.

Cyberattack Allegations and Presidential Remarks

Adding another layer to the complex geopolitical landscape, several U.S. officials have alleged that American intelligence agencies assessed Iran to be likely responsible for a recent cyberattack targeting Minnesota’s water infrastructure. The attack reportedly affected more than 30 municipal water systems earlier in the week. However, President Trump diverged from these assessments, attributing the cyberattack to the state’s own perceived incompetence rather than foreign interference.

During a televised Cabinet meeting at Camp David, Trump stated, “We heard in Minnesota there was a cyberattack, and they blame it on Iran. I don’t think so.” He continued, “I think I blame it on Minnesota because they’re grossly incompetent.” He further suggested that the state’s governor might be behind the assault on its own water systems. These remarks contrast with an internal report from the Minnesota Fusion Center, a state intelligence group, which reportedly found the hacks to be “aligned” with an entity allegedly backed by Tehran and linked to a broader campaign.

Strategic Considerations and Munitions Supply

The potential for escalation in Iran also raises questions about the U.S. military’s supply of certain air defense munitions, such as Patriot missile interceptors. Experts have noted that a prolonged or widespread conflict could strain these diminishing resources.

Conclusion

As the weekend approaches, the international community watches closely, with both Iran and the United States appearing poised for further military engagement. The naming of new targets by Iran and the ongoing deliberations within the U.S. administration underscore the precarious state of relations and the potential for significant developments in the coming days.
