In a stunning upset at the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, Canadian swimming sensation Summer McIntosh, the reigning world record holder in the women’s 400m freestyle, has failed to qualify for the final of the event. The unexpected outcome significantly boosts the medal hopes for Australia’s Lani Pallister, who finished ahead of McIntosh in their respective heat.

McIntosh’s Disappointing Heat Performance

The 19-year-old McIntosh, a formidable force in international swimming and a silver medalist in this event at the 2024 Olympics, could only manage the ninth-fastest time overall in the preliminary heats, clocking 4:08.56. This result placed her third in her heat, behind Australia’s Lani Pallister (4:05.22) and just 0.2 seconds behind the eighth-fastest qualifier, Fan Yaqi of China (4:08.36). The performance marks a significant departure from McIntosh’s usual dominance in an event where she holds the world record, a mark she set at 14 seconds faster than her heat swim.

McIntosh, who was reportedly attempting to conserve energy for the final, appeared visibly shocked by the result. She opted not to speak with the media immediately following the race but later took to Instagram to address her performance. “I take full responsibility for my misjudgment in this morning’s heats,” McIntosh stated on the social media platform. While she will compete in the ‘B’ final, she is now ineligible for a medal in the 400m freestyle.

Pallister Advances, Sets Up Ledecky Showdown

Lani Pallister’s strong performance in the heats, securing the fourth-fastest qualifying time (4:05.22), positions her as a key contender for the gold medal. The Australian swimmer, who boasts a personal best of 3:58.87 and recently claimed gold in the 400m freestyle at the Commonwealth Games, will face stiff competition from American legend Katie Ledecky. Ledecky, a multi-Olympic champion, led the qualifiers with an impressive time of 4:03.48.

The final is shaping up to be a compelling contest between Ledecky and Pallister. Both swimmers have demonstrated formidable form this year, with both having broken the four-minute barrier. While Ledecky may hold a slight edge as the fastest qualifier, Pallister’s recent victories and consistent performances indicate a fierce battle is imminent.

Key Qualifiers for the Women’s 400m Freestyle Final:

  • Katie Ledecky (USA) — 4:03.48
  • Erika Fairweather (NZL) — 4:04.50
  • Kennedi Dobson (USA) — 4:05.10
  • Lani Pallister (AUS) — 4:05.22
  • Maria Fernanda Costa (BRA) — 4:06.63
  • Moesha Johnson (AUS) — 4:07.75
  • Ichika Kajimoto (JPN) — 4:07.92
  • Yaqi Fan (CHN) — 4:08.36

McIntosh’s Recent Form and Challenges

This unexpected result in the 400m freestyle follows a series of mixed performances from McIntosh. Earlier in the meet, she secured a victory over Pallister in the 200m freestyle, a win that raised questions about McIntosh’s form, particularly after she withdrew from races at her national trials due to illness. She later rebounded to win the 400m individual medley, an event where she also holds the world record, ahead of Australia’s Jenna Forrester. However, McIntosh expressed dissatisfaction with her performance even in that winning effort.

Pallister, typically more recognized as an 800m and 1500m specialist, has expressed a strong desire to excel in the 400m distance. “I had a pretty cruisy last 300 metres,” Pallister commented after her heat swim. “My 400 [freestyle] is just sitting in this weird little space at the moment. I want so much more for that event.” Her performance in Irvine suggests she is well on her way to achieving those ambitions.

Australian Men’s 400m Freestyle Prospects

On the men’s side, Australian swimmer Sam Short is considered a strong contender for gold in the 400m freestyle. Short qualified fastest for his final with a commanding time of 3:44.34. He anticipates a challenging race, noting, “It’s going to be a hot race and way quicker than this morning. This will be a harder win than my 800. I have been flying in the 400 but [China’s] Zhang Zhanshuo is a better competitor than Bobby Finke at the moment.” Short’s confidence and strategic assessment highlight the competitive depth in the men’s event.

Conclusion

The Pan Pacific Championships have delivered a significant surprise with the early exit of Summer McIntosh from the women’s 400m freestyle final. This opens the door for Lani Pallister and Katie Ledecky to battle for the top spot, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to the event. Swimmers and fans alike will be watching closely to see how these top athletes perform in the remaining events.
