Sheffield United, a prominent club in the English Football League (EFL) Championship, is facing significant repercussions after the company used by its current owners to acquire the club was hit with a winding-up order. This development has triggered an investigation by the EFL into potential breaches of its rules, raising the specter of a severe 12-point deduction for the club.
The Winding-Up Order and Ownership Dispute
The crisis stems from a legal dispute initiated by United World, the investment arm associated with former owner Prince Abdullah Bin Mosaad Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. United World has taken COH Sports Bidco, the entity through which American businessmen Helmy Eltoukhy and Steven Rosen purchased the club, to the High Court. The core of the claim is that United World is owed approximately £35 million from the sale, which concluded in 2024.
United World alleges that the current custodians, Eltoukhy and Rosen, have essentially attempted to gain control of Sheffield United without fulfilling the financial obligations of the purchase. This is reportedly due to the transfer of shares in the club to a new company, a move United World views as an attempt to circumvent payment.
While the American owners have reportedly dismissed these claims as a mere “publicity stunt,” a High Court judge has issued the winding-up order against COH Sports Bidco. This legal action is now under the scrutiny of the EFL, which will determine the appropriate course of action, including potential sporting sanctions.
Club Owners’ Response and United World’s Stance
A spokesperson for United World expressed that they had “made every effort to resolve the matter amicably” and had even attempted to do so again on the day of the court’s decision. The aim was to provide the current owners a final chance to prevent Sheffield United from facing the consequences of their alleged actions.
The spokesperson further stated, “It appears that Helmy Eltoukhy and Steven Rosen are simply not concerned about what this means for the club. What happens now is the result of their choices. United World will continue to pursue the full sums.” This indicates a firm resolve from the former owners to recover the disputed funds.
The actions of Eltoukhy and Rosen are now central to the unfolding situation, with their alleged lack of concern for the club’s well-being being highlighted by United World.
