Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala has received medical clearance from neurologists to continue playing professional football following two on-pitch collapses within a four-day period. The club’s honorary president, Uli Hoeness, revealed that written confirmation was obtained from medical experts, assuring that there were no concerns about Musiala participating in high-performance sports. This comes after Musiala himself disclosed on Tuesday that he is undergoing treatment for a “neurological dysfunction” which he stated is causing brief, temporary absence seizures.
Musiala’s On-Pitch Incidents and Diagnosis
The first incident occurred during Bayern’s 3-1 friendly victory over RB Leipzig, where Musiala appeared disoriented after scoring. His teammates quickly reacted to support him as he waited for the match to resume. Just four days later, during a friendly against Heidenheim, Musiala collapsed again six minutes after coming on as a substitute in the 4-2 win. On both occasions, teammates formed a protective shield around him to afford him privacy during the medical attention he received.
Following the second collapse, Musiala addressed the situation publicly via Instagram. He explained that he has been diagnosed with “brief, temporary – but treatable – absence seizures resulting from a neurological dysfunction.” He emphasized that while these episodes might appear alarming, they are currently a part of his daily life. Musiala stated he is receiving excellent medical care and remains optimistic about his recovery.
Club Awareness and Neurologists’ Clearance
Uli Hoeness shared his personal reaction to the recurring collapses, admitting he was left “speechless,” which he described as rare for him. He confirmed that the club had been aware of Musiala’s condition for some time. “At that point, we thought, ‘If it doesn’t happen again so quickly, then the medication he’s taking will help.’ But when it happened again four days later, in the same way, it completely floored me,” Hoeness stated.
Crucially, Hoeness detailed the process of obtaining medical assurance. “The treating physicians, the neurologists, gave us written confirmation, because it was absolutely essential for us that, from their perspective, there were no concerns about Jamal participating in high-performance sports,” he explained. He added that without this clearance, the club would have been acting negligently. “Since we received this written confirmation, we’ve been sleeping a bit more soundly,” Hoeness commented, though he still expressed a sense of being without a definitive solution.
Musiala’s Personal Decision and Support Network
Musiala himself stressed that his decision to continue playing was a personal one, made in close consultation with medical experts. He asserted that there is “no further health risk involved” and that playing football is what he believes helps his recovery most. “I want to continue doing what helps my recovery most: simply living my life and pursuing my passion for playing football,” he stated.
He took full responsibility for this choice and expressed his desire to keep the matter private, sharing details only with his closest circle, the club, and medical professionals. Musiala also highlighted the unwavering support he has received from FC Bayern and his personal network. “FC Bayern and my personal support network are right by my side, helping me through this,” he shared.
Looking Ahead: Continued Support and Privacy
Hoeness reiterated the club’s commitment to supporting Musiala unconditionally. “We’ve already taken some precautions,” he mentioned, without elaborating on their nature. He acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, stating, “I go to bed thinking about him and wake up thinking about him.” However, he also recognized the medium-term implications for the club, admitting they are still learning how to manage the situation.
Despite the challenges, Musiala’s medical clearance suggests he could be available for selection soon. His proactive communication and the club’s adherence to medical advice aim to balance his passion for the sport with the management of his neurological condition, while respecting his request for privacy.
