British Sheep Farming Faces Crisis: Synthetic Fibers and Cheap Meat Threaten Heritage Breeds
SHARE

The future of traditional British sheep farming is under significant threat, facing a dual challenge from the prevalence of inexpensive synthetic fibers and the widespread consumption of imported lamb. This crisis jeopardizes not only the livelihoods of farmers but also the survival of many of the UK’s 63 native sheep breeds, which are now at risk of extinction.

A Long History of Ovine Importance

Sheep have been integral to human civilization for millennia. Domesticated between 11,000 and 9,000 BC, these hardy animals provided prehistoric peoples with essential resources: meat for sustenance, milk for nutrition, and wool for warmth and clothing. The economic significance of sheep’s wool in the British Isles cannot be overstated. By the Middle Ages, the wool trade was a cornerstone of the economy, providing the wealth necessary to construct many of England’s grand country estates and the magnificent ‘wool churches’ found in regions like East Anglia and the Cotswolds. This historical importance is still symbolically recognized today, with the Speaker of the House of Lords presiding over proceedings from the Woolsack, a large cushion filled with wool, a tradition dating back to the 14th century to underscore the trade’s vital role in England’s prosperity.

The Modern Crisis: Falling Wool Prices and Imported Meat

Despite their historical and economic significance, sheep farming is currently experiencing a profound crisis. The market for pure wool, described by conservationist and farmer Polly Pullar as ‘the world’s finest natural fibre,’ has dramatically declined. This downturn is largely attributed to the availability of cheap, mass-produced synthetic fibers that have become the preferred choice for many consumers and industries. The low demand has driven wool prices to such an extent that many British sheep farmers are finding it economically unviable to sell their wool, resorting to burning or burying it instead.

Compounding the issue is the consumer preference for imported lamb. Many shoppers opt for cheaper cuts of New Zealand lamb, for instance, overlooking the benefits of supporting domestic British sheep farmers. This reliance on foreign produce further squeezes the profitability of local agriculture.

Threat to Native Breeds

The economic pressures are having a direct and devastating impact on the UK’s diverse sheep population. Many of the 63 native breeds, each with unique characteristics and historical significance, are now facing the very real threat of extinction. These breeds are not merely livestock; they are living heritage, adapted over centuries to specific landscapes and farming practices.

The Enduring Value of Sheep and Sheep Farming

Polly Pullar, an advocate for sheep and their farming, emphasizes the critical role sheep play in maintaining the British countryside. In her book, “In the Company of Sheep,” she passionately defends sheep farming, highlighting how the loss of ancient hill farms, sustained by sheep, would profoundly diminish the rural landscape. Pullar’s work serves as both a defense of traditional farming and an exploration of the often-misunderstood nature of sheep.

Pullar shares personal anecdotes, recalling her childhood affection for Lulu, a Blackface lamb she raised at her family’s hotel on Scotland’s west coast. Lulu’s playful antics, including sneaking shortbread and sampling marmalade, were a unique feature of the hotel before stringent health and safety regulations became commonplace. Pullar notes that in her youth, a pet lamb often enhanced, rather than detracted from, the guest experience.

Sheep: Intelligent and Affectionate Companions

Contrary to popular perception, Pullar argues that sheep are far from unintelligent. She describes them as intelligent, strong-willed, and capable of forming deep, affectionate bonds with humans when given the opportunity. “Few animals have existed beside us for quite so long,” she observes, underscoring the deep, historical connection between humans and sheep.

Her travels across Britain, from Dorset and Yorkshire to Wales, the Lake District, the Scottish Borders, and the Western Isles, reveal a vibrant community of sheep farmers dedicated to their craft. Through these encounters, Pullar paints a picture of sheep farming as a vital element of the national identity and rural heritage.

Conclusion: A Call for Appreciation and Support

The indifference shown towards the decline of sheep farming carries significant consequences. If sheep are reduced to mere picturesque elements in the landscape – “picturesque white blobs dotting our fields” – Britain risks becoming a vastly diminished place. The intricate relationship between sheep, farmers, and the land is a delicate ecosystem that supports biodiversity, cultural heritage, and the rural economy. Supporting British sheep farmers, valuing pure wool, and making conscious choices about meat consumption are crucial steps in ensuring the survival of these essential animals and the landscapes they inhabit.
