Rory Lobb on Bullying: AFL Star’s Struggle with Suicidal Thoughts
SHARE

AFL player Rory Lobb has bravely shared his harrowing teenage experience with severe schoolyard bullying, revealing it led to suicidal thoughts and hospitalisation. The Western Bulldogs veteran recounted the relentless physical and verbal abuse he endured, which became so intense that he was forced to leave school and felt he was “very close to tipping over the edge.” Lobb’s candid account, shared on Channel Seven’s “Unfiltered,” sheds light on the profound impact of bullying and the critical importance of speaking out.

The Devastating Impact of Schoolyard Bullying

During his Year 9 at Governor Stirling Senior High School in Perth, Lobb described a shift in the school environment that led to him becoming a target. What began as a positive experience, particularly within the school’s football program, deteriorated when a new student arrived, fostering what Lobb termed a “pack mentality.” This collective aggression turned his school days into “hell,” leaving him in a “dark place” where “every hour was terrible.” The bullying wasn’t just verbal; Lobb revealed he was physically assaulted on multiple occasions, including one incident where he was knocked unconscious. This violence, coupled with constant emotional distress, took a severe toll on his mental health.

The emotional weight of the abuse was overwhelming. Lobb found himself pulling “a lot of sickies” to avoid school, and home became his sole sanctuary. Even his passion for sport offered little respite, as some of his tormentors were also involved in the football program. The situation escalated to a point where his mother, deeply concerned for his well-being, made the difficult decision to pull him out of school midway through Year 9.

A Mother’s Intervention and a Friend’s Lifeline

The turning point came during a conversation with his mother when Lobb was experiencing suicidal thoughts. “I was lucky enough to speak to my mum when I was having suicidal thoughts,” he shared, underscoring the vital role of open communication during crises. His mother’s intervention was crucial, providing him with an escape from the relentless torment. “I was very close to tipping over the edge,” Lobb admitted, expressing gratitude that he was able to voice his struggles and “catch myself at such a young age.”

Amidst the adversity, Lobb also highlighted the profound impact of a single act of kindness. He paid tribute to one boy who refused to join the bullying, maintaining their friendship despite the prevailing “pack mentality.” This individual’s steadfast support was a lifeline for Lobb, helping him navigate the ordeal. “I feel like he really saved me in a way,” Lobb stated, noting that they still maintain a relationship. This friendship provided a crucial anchor during a period that had stripped him of his enjoyment of football and left him feeling isolated.

Life After School and a Message of Hope

Following his departure from school, Lobb’s life took a different path. He engaged in work with men, temporarily stepped away from sports, and spent a significant amount of time in solitude, finding an escape in movies. His courageous decision to speak publicly about his experiences has resonated deeply, with many supporters from various AFL clubs sharing their own stories of bullying and commending his openness.

The outpouring of support and shared experiences demonstrates the widespread nature of bullying and its lasting effects. Comments from fellow fans highlighted how Lobb’s story resonated with their own past struggles, with many expressing newfound admiration for the player.

The Importance of Speaking Up

Lobb, who was drafted by GWS in 2013 and has since played for Fremantle before joining the Western Bulldogs, hopes his story will encourage others facing similar challenges to seek help. His primary message to children and young people is simple yet powerful: “Just to speak up.” He acknowledged that while it seems obvious, it remains one of the most difficult actions to take. Reflecting on his own experience, he expressed regret for not speaking out sooner, emphasizing that he “sort of got to a stage where I had those thoughts” before finding the courage to confide in his mother.

Lobb’s journey serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of bullying and the immense strength found in vulnerability and seeking support. His willingness to share such a personal and painful chapter of his life offers a beacon of hope and a vital call to action for anyone experiencing or witnessing bullying.
