Zimbabwean opposition lawmaker Need Moyo has died after the automobile he was travelling in hit an elephant, native media report.
The accident occurred within the early hours of Friday morning whereas Mr Moyo and 4 different MPs have been travelling alongside the Bulawayo-Gweru freeway, in response to state-owned broadcaster ZBC.
He died immediately whereas his fellow lawmakers have been left injured, the information outlet added.
Tributes are pouring in for the well-known poet, hailed for his contribution to the humanities, who died a day earlier than his forty sixth birthday.
He was a member of the opposition Residents Coalition for Change (CCC), led by Nelson Chamisa, and served within the Zimbabwean parliament’s sport, recreation, arts and tradition committee.
The Nkulumane Constituency in Zimbabwe’s second metropolis, Bulawayo, which he represented, confirmed the information of his demise in a press release and shared its “deep sorrow and profound shock”.
Fellow CCC member and MP Discent Bajila offered extra particulars on the horrific crash to native information web site ZimLive.com. He advised the publication he had spoken to the injured MPs, who relayed what had occurred.
“I spoke to [Madalaboy] Ndebele, who was within the entrance passenger seat. His recollection is that they hit the elephant on its bottom. After the influence, he remembers the elephant turning spherical and combating the automobile.
“This, he believes, is what did probably the most harm on the highest proper facet of the automobile and in the end led to Moyo’s deadly accidents,” Bajila stated.
Fellow lawmaker Caston Matewu was amongst these to pay tribute to Moyo, affectionately referred to as Moyoxide, hailing him as “one of many hardest working MPs in Parliament”.
“The individuals of Nkulumani [sic] have been robbed of this nice [man],” Mr Matewu stated.
The Metropolis of Bulawayo, led by mayor David Coltart, stated Mr Moyo could be remembered as an “iconic chief … and artistic” who “strove to champion the humanities” within the metropolis and past.
Mr Moyo was an award-winning poet, educator and humanities administrator “who devoted his life to nurturing Zimbabwe’s artistic sector”, in response to the state-run Herald information web site.
The opposite lawmakers concerned in Friday’s crash have been taken to hospital.
