MUNICH, Germany – A German courtroom on Tuesday, November 11, sided with the nation’s music rights society GEMA in a carefully watched copyright case towards US-based synthetic intelligence agency OpenAI.

GEMA had argued OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT reproduces lyrics from copyrighted German songs with out authorization, and that its AI was skilled on protected content material from the repertoire of its roughly 100,000 members, who embrace best-selling musician Herbert Groenemeyer.

OpenAI responded by saying that GEMA’s arguments mirrored a misunderstanding of how ChatGPT works.

The case may set a precedent for the way generative AI methods are regulated in Europe. GEMA is searching for the institution of a licensing framework that may require AI builders to pay for using musical works in each coaching and output.
