Queen Rania of Jordan marked her 56th birthday on August 31st with a touching tribute, sharing a photograph alongside her four granddaughters. The portrait, released by the Royal Hashemite Court, captures the Queen in a relaxed yet elegant setting, just weeks after her daughter, Princess Iman, welcomed twin girls.

A Joyful Birthday Amidst Family Milestones

The Jordanian monarch embraced a casual yet chic ensemble for her birthday portrait, opting for a pair of blue jeans and a simple white top. She accessorized with stylish earrings and a fitness watch, her hair styled in an updo and her makeup kept subtle, reflecting a natural and effortless grace. This personal celebration follows closely on the heels of a significant family event: the birth of twin granddaughters to Princess Iman and her husband, Jameel Alexander Thermiotis.

Queen Rania shared her birthday sentiment on Instagram, posting a heartwarming picture with her four granddaughters – Princesses Amina, Iman, Talia, and Rania. She captioned the image with a heartfelt message: “Spending my birthday in the best way imaginable. Love you, my favourite little girls.” This personal touch resonated with many, highlighting the Queen’s joy in her growing family.

The Newest Additions to the Royal Family

Princess Iman, the eldest daughter of Queen Rania and King Abdullah II, welcomed twin daughters earlier this month. One of the newborns was lovingly named Rania, a tribute to her grandmother. The other twin was named Talia. The birth of these twins marks the third and fourth grandchildren for King Abdullah II and Queen Rania, arriving within a little over two years.

The Royal Hashemite Court officially announced the birth of the twin girls on August 14th, extending congratulations to Princess Iman, Mr. Jameel, and Their Majesties. The announcement highlighted the joy and anticipation surrounding the arrival of the new babies. Princess Iman and her husband had kept the pregnancy private for much of the year, with Queen Rania first sharing a photo of Iman with her baby bump in July.

The names chosen for the twins carry special meaning. Rania, in Arabic, signifies “radiant,” while Talia is interpreted as “morning dew” or “gentle dew from heaven.” This thoughtful naming reflects the deep affection within the family.

Queen Rania’s Journey to Royalty

Born Rania Al-Yassin on August 31, 1970, in Kuwait, Queen Rania began life with more modest circumstances. Her parents, Dr. Faisal Sedki Al-Yassin and Ilham Yassin, are of Palestinian descent. She received her education at the New English School in Kuwait City and later graduated with a business degree from the American University in Cairo in 1991.

Her early professional career included roles at Citibank and a marketing position with Apple. Her life took a pivotal turn in 1993 when she met her future husband, Abdullah II, at a dinner party. Their connection was swift, leading to an engagement just two months later and a wedding five months after their first meeting.

A Royal Wedding and Unexpected Path to the Throne

The royal wedding took place at Zahran Palace in Amman, an event so significant it was declared a national holiday. Unlike many royal brides who wear family jewels, Rania’s family did not possess an extensive collection. Instead, she opted for an embellished headband attached to her veil, styled elegantly with her intricate updo.

At the time of her marriage to Abdullah, Rania did not anticipate becoming Queen. The line of succession was then headed by Abdullah’s uncle, Prince Hassan. However, in a significant shift in 1999, King Hussein, on his deathbed, altered the succession, naming his son Abdullah as the heir apparent, thus paving the way for Rania to become Queen.

The Royal Family Tree

Queen Rania and King Abdullah II, who married in 1993, have four children: Crown Prince Hussein (born 1992), Princess Iman (born 1996), Princess Salma (born 2000), and Prince Hashem (born 2005). The recent birth of Princess Iman’s twin daughters adds to the growing joy and legacy of the Jordanian royal family.

Princess Iman’s husband, Jameel Alexander Thermiotis, is a Managing Partner at a Venture Capital fund in the United States. He was born in Caracas, Venezuela, to a Greek family. His background and career in finance underscore the modern, international connections of the royal family.

A Queen’s Enduring Appeal

Queen Rania continues to be a prominent figure, admired for her grace, style, and dedication to humanitarian causes. Her birthday celebration, surrounded by her granddaughters, offers a glimpse into her personal life and the warmth of her family bonds, even as she maintains her public role with poise and dignity.
