Fox League commentator Warren Smith, a staple in rugby league broadcasting for nearly three decades, steps back from the microphone after a diagnosis of pre-cancerous lesions on his vocal cords.
Viewers noticed Smith’s absence during the NRL season opener in Las Vegas. The veteran caller, known for his energetic style, experienced voice difficulties toward the end of the 2025 season.
Discovery and Diagnosis
Smith pushed through the final two or three months of last season despite noticing something unusual with his voice. “I was just sort of battling through the end of the season last year – the last two or three months,” Smith said.
“Doing what we do, we’re screaming and carrying on on TV quite a lot. It’s sort of just a hazard of the job, and we all deal with voices that aren’t at their best all the time. But I just sort of thought, ‘This is not quite right, there’s something else doing.'”
He consulted a specialist the week after the grand final. Scans confirmed laryngeal carcinoma, prompting immediate action.
Treatment and Recovery
Smith underwent three laser surgeries to address the abnormal tissue in his voice box. During recovery, he relied on a clipboard to communicate with his wife, as doctors prohibited speaking.
Despite the setback, Smith remains optimistic about returning to the commentary booth soon. “We all end at some stage as far as our careers are concerned, but I want to go out on my terms,” he stated.
Career Highlights
Since joining Fox Sports in 1995, Smith has become one of Australia’s most versatile commentators. He covers NRL matches, World Superbike Championships, and Presidents Cup golf events. Recently, he participated in the Super Swim challenge to support the Starlight Foundation.
Fan Support
Fans rallied behind Smith on X following the announcement. One wrote, “Take care, Warren. Look forward to seeing you back in the comms box shortly.”
Another added, “Here’s to a solid recovery – here’s to hearing you back in the box soon. All the best to you and yours Warren.” A third fan said, “He is one of my favourites; hoping he makes a healthy recovery and can get back behind the mic soon.”
