Singer Alanis Morissette has shared candid details about her struggles with postpartum depression, revealing that she experienced psychotic episodes and had intrusive thoughts of death and harm after the birth of her third child. The 52-year-old artist discussed her experiences on the podcast “Call Her Daddy” with host Alex Cooper.

Understanding Postpartum Depression and Anxiety

Morissette, known for her hit song “Ironic,” explained that while she was familiar with the general symptoms of depression, the postpartum period brought a new level of distress. “It was all the other stuff,” she stated, referring to the overwhelming and terrifying intrusive thoughts that accompanied her postpartum depression. “It was the invasive thoughts and the terror. All I could picture was death and terrible things.”

Postpartum depression (PPD) is recognized as part of a broader category of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. According to health information from sources like the Mayo Clinic, common symptoms can include difficulty bonding with a newborn, a loss of enjoyment in motherhood, periods of intense anger or sadness, excessive crying, and feeling constantly overwhelmed. Some individuals may also experience thoughts of harming themselves or a desire to escape their situation.

The Impact of Perceived Sanity

The Grammy-winning singer expressed that while she is now in a better place, the experience significantly impacted how others perceived her. “It was a bummer to lose people’s trust in her sanity,” Morissette recounted. She described how friends and family looked at her differently, with concern that she might not be stable or could “fly off the handle.” This external perception added another layer of difficulty to her already challenging internal state.

Increasing Severity with Each Pregnancy

Morissette, who is mother to Ever (14), Onyx (10), and Winter (7), shares her children with husband Mario ‘Souleye’ Treadaway. She revealed that she has experienced postpartum depression after each of her pregnancies, but noted that the condition did not become easier over time. “From my experience, each postpartum depression gets increasingly harder,” she admitted.

Despite the escalating difficulty, her desire to connect with her children motivated her to persevere. “I just wanted to meet my kids, though, so badly, so I kept going,” she said.

A Shift in Reality

Following the birth of her third child, Morissette described a profound detachment from reality. “Basically, I became another person,” she explained. She characterized the experience as a combination of hormonal fluctuations, akin to menopausal changes, severe depression, and relentless, harrowing intrusive thoughts. “There’s some version of menopausal flux, combined with depression, invasive thoughts that are so harrowing, terrible, ceaseless,” she elaborated.

This intense period led her to use the term “postpartum activity” rather than solely “depression,” as she felt the symptoms extended beyond typical depressive states. The overwhelming nature of her experience prompted her to seek help much sooner with subsequent children. “First time, I waited a year and two months,” she recalled. “Second time I waited eight months. And third time, I think I waited three days. I was just like, ‘Oh no, I’m not doing this again.’ And I did it again.”

Pushing Through While Struggling

Morissette recounted pushing through her tour commitments during the COVID-19 pandemic, managing professional responsibilities and finances while secretly battling her mental health crisis. “I still showed up. I dipped into psychosis,” she admitted, describing the period as “a wild ride.” This period highlights the immense internal struggle she faced while maintaining a public persona and professional obligations.

The artist married Mario Treadaway in 2010. Previously, she was engaged to actor Ryan Reynolds for three years before their separation in 2007.

Conclusion: Seeking Help and Recovery

Alanis Morissette’s candid account underscores the severe and varied nature of postpartum mental health challenges, extending beyond traditional depression to include psychosis and debilitating intrusive thoughts. Her willingness to share her story sheds light on the critical importance of recognizing these symptoms early and seeking timely support. The increasing speed with which she sought help after subsequent births demonstrates a growing awareness and determination to overcome the condition, emphasizing that recovery is possible, even through the most difficult phases of postpartum adjustment.
